Hate to disappoint the OP but if you ask 50 1911 guys you will get 25 different answers and none of them are wrong.
I prefer colts but that's bc I use them as a base gun to pour stupids amounts of money into to get it the way I want it.
I would read up on Hilton Yam at 10-8, he has plenty of exp with diff Manu and I can guarantee he has forgotten more about the 1911 then anyone on here will ever know.

This is so true. Some will say Colt because they've been doing it since the beginning (doesn't mean shite imho). You'll get others to say Volkmann, Wilson Combat, Les Baer, Ed Brown, Nighthawk or John Jardine.
A Springfield won the FBI contract. No one cares more about how pretty a gun is than a 1911 fanatic.

I am also part of team S&W for the 1911 but the Ruger SR1911 is a hell of a bargain in both full size and commander size. I wish my damn photobucket would let me post my Smith. When did they start this limited bandwidth BS?
I'll be able to post it in a day. Sit tight and it will make you want one.

Wilson Combat and it isn't even close. Of course you will be paying 3K+ for even an entry level WC model.

Where's the concrete evidence?

I like Ed Brown.
He mills all his stuff in-house.
Excellent customer service and vey easy to deal with.

Larry Vickers has forgotten more about firearms than you or I will likely ever know and he says that the Wilson Combat CQB is the best out of the box 1911 on the market.
If you don't know who Larry Vickers is go and google him.
His opinion is all of the concrete evidence I need. Too bad I don't have the $$$ to buy a WC 1911.

You do realize that government contracts typically go to the lowest bidder. If not the lowest bidder then the lowest and most responsible bidder. What this means is that the bidder has the capability to actually deliver what is in the Request for Purchase in the Contract. The fact that the FBI awarded a contract to SA doesn't mean that SA is better it just means that SA was likely the lowest bidder/most responsible bidder.

Sooo you're going by one man's opinion and have never owned one. Good to know. :)

When that one guy is an expert that teaches classes on using the 1911 and is a former Delta Force member, I trust his opinion over pretty much anybody else's.

Best value that meets specs while achieving the lowest cost.
None of the cottage makers of 1911s could deliver the quantities the government required.
FWIW, Colt won the Marine Corps 1911 contract.

Apparently you don't remember the vickers tactical nhc pistol, which he said was the best 1911 at that time. Now he's on Wilson's payroll so it's not hard to see why he now views Wilson as the best 1911.

Makes sense that WC would put him on the payroll when he touts their pistols. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
My point is that this guy isn't some idiot working the counter at Bass Pro. He knows his shite and that makes his opinion way more valuable.

Exactly. The USMC isn't going to spend 3k per pistol by going with a Les Baer, Ed Brown, WC, etc. and they aren't set up to crank out that number of firearms. Colt is set up to deliver a large number of quality 1911's that meet (probably exceed) the minimum requirements of the USMC.

Lol you're just proving the point I made a few pages ago.
