For decades the 30-30 was the best light kicking, handy deer rifle around and it is still deadly inside 200 yards. Any of the 243 - 7-08 calibers mentioned in a bolt action will work. But the situation mentioned in the OP seemed like the perfect excuse to buy a cool little lever action.
