Great read - sorry Saints fans...no Drew Brees.

Rich Gannon,

Raiders Reign: 2002

I think everybody was ready for Peyton Manning to take this spot, but he actually didn't have a great 2002 season and still hadn't won a playoff game, which (perhaps unfairly) affected his public perception. The 37-year-old Gannon, a modern-day Tittle or Tarkenton, won league MVP in a year when Priest Holmes probably deserved the nod. He would start just 10 more professional games after this season, going 4-6, before retiring.

Not a big deal but Brees was definitely better in 09 than manning was.

Better statistically, beat him heads up while winning sb mvp, better throughout playoffs. That's the only year Brees should've had it IMo. Manning had a great season but won it on reputation.

Yeah, Brees should have won it for 09. Or maybe for setting the single season passing record. Otherwise the list is pretty solid.

Brees may have deserved the MVP that year but these things are irrelevant since the award is a regular season award and Peyton already had his MVP trophy before the Superbowl began

Brees also had more tds and 5 less picks and about 200 less yards while sitting out final game. Whatever qbr uses as a metric is obviously pretty flawed.

I dont think QBR was invented yet in 2009

QBR is a bogus ESPN made stat

They have back until 2008 or 2009 on Pro Football Reference.

Yep but they must've retroactively calculated on some sites. Brees also passed for over 70 percent that year. So more accurate, more tds, less picks 200 less yards. Definitely makes sense

not to mention being on the losing end in the last lopsided Super Bowl to date

he threw more passes that resulted in TD's for the Bucs than Brad Johnson did that day.

not a bad list though. I'm not going to complain about Brees being absent on this list.

Instead, I'll just say I'm glad he came to New Orleans and helped turn around a franchise and set records.

Joe Namath, New York Jets

Reign: 1968-69

Namath is one of those players who inspire a lot of overrated quips by researchers who look back and see some pretty mediocre statistics coupled with injury issues and a career built on a famous quote. I used to be one of those very people, but I've been convinced otherwise by smart people like Chase Stuart, who did a great job of putting Namath's career in context. He was first-team everything in 1968 even before the Super Bowl victory, and there was no NFL quarterback who matched his AFL reputation. He won the AFL AP Player of the Year award in 1969, a season when he was probably about equal to Raiders quarterback Daryle Lamonica. A year later, the two leagues would merge, but Namath missed most of the season with an injury, and Lamonica was overshadowed by another Bay Area passer …

The flaw with qbr when looking at drew in 09 is it assumes competitive games. Usually a good assumption given the parity in the nfl. Not a good assumption for the 09 saints.

Peyton throwing a 4th quarter td to win a game can carry more weight than drew blowing the doors off the pats in the first half.

The saints were a dominant team for much of 09 and that hurts drew in qbr.

Manning and Unitas come out the best on this list. Barnwell is a wise man

Peyton Manning was the better talent in 2009. He had the inferior supporting cast and the inferior coach.

So I am guessing Bill Barnwell is an unapologetic Cowboys hater? Is that his schtick?

Roger Starbach was easily the best QB of the 70s
