does the choke tube matter for slugs?

Self explanatory. I have stock rem 870s. Will it hurt to shoot slugs from what I think is a modified choke?

I would use the most open choke that you have.

I only have the ones that came with the guns.

You got one that says "improved cylinder"? If so, use that one.

Modified or Improved cylinder should be ok. Not full choke.

The only choke I have is the only one in the gun. Ones a 12 and the other is a 20. I "think" they are modified. I don't know where the choke wrench is.

Should be able to get some more chokes cheap...

Shooting a slug in a full choke would be a bad idea?

Why not get a rifled slug choke?

Could potentially frick up your choke, which would frick up your barrel.

I wouldn't even shoot modified. Just open cylinder or improved cylinder.

How many "notches" on the lip of the choke tube?
1 notch = full choke (most restrictive)
2 notches = improved modified
3 notches = modified
4 notches = improved cylinder
5 notches = cylinder (least restrictive)
I would't use any choke with under 3 notches in the lip of the choke tube.

Chokes are only a few bucks a pop. Much cheaper than a new 870. The choke wrenches are also cheap, I think you can even use a nickel if I remember correctly.

Quarter but yeah I've had to use them before in a duck blind. I keep a choke tube wrench on my key ring.
