FEMA OKs Construction of New City Park (NOLA) championship golf course

It appears construction of the $24.5 million championship golf course at City Park could begin before the end of the year. City Park CEO Bob Becker said FEMA has green-lighted the project and the state is fairly confident it can be bid out at the end of August with construction starting possibly as early as November.

If the project begins then, the course would probably open in either the early part of 2015 or the latter part of the year, depending on when the grass can be planted for the growing season in 2014.

But the primary hurdle to the project being on hold has been cleared. Course construction seemed to be ready to bid out last February. But FEMA decided an archeological analysis of the property was needed to see if there were any Native American artifacts there similar to what was found in Bayou St. John.
quote:
The design of the course, which was $300,000 of the $24.5 million and was paid for by the Bayou District Foundation, has already been completed. Rees Jones Inc., and Torre Design Consortium worked along with the PGA Tour course design team to map out the course, which will be built on 250 acres of the old East and West courses.
The course could(will) one day host the PGA Tour’s annual stop in New Orleans, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. TPC Louisiana in Avondale is contracted to hold the Zurich through 2016. Zurich re-upped as title sponsor of the New Orleans event through 2019 in April.

I am not sure that this is a good idea for golf in New Orleans, but for selfish reasons, I am excited

So they're gonna tear down the softball fields? Also some man made running trails back there too

O, I am very excited. This is going to be a good course. Bayou District has done a good job on this one.

No doubt ... And difficult too. Rees Jones doesn't make easy golf courses ... I'm just concerned that at this price point you will be excluding the very people that city park was built for.
It's going to cost at least $100 bucks to play (maybe closer to $200) and take five hours plus to finish a round (due to the difficulty of the course). Not very player friendly. We already have one upscale course that does not turn a profit, do the taxpayers really need another???
But on a selfish note, I am going to LOVE having a Rees jones design nearby and cant wait to pay there as much as possible

Would love to see the Zurich at City Park. Attendance and interest would be much stronger.

I don't think it is going to be as Rees Jones influenced as you think, i know i know it says he designed it.
I think they have a good plan in place to make it sustainable.

The goal is to get a major championship at the site.

what do you think this means for TPC?
what do you think happens to them if they lose the tournament?

I don't want the Zurich to go into the city for selfish reasons(it's so close to the house I don't have to get up real early to be there for 6 am). The new course will run into financial trouble quickly if the greens fees are too high. Looking at what they charge now for the shitty North Course, the new one would probably run around $150. Not sure if this area could support that.

This for sure. $50 is robbery for what you get at City Park, but I'm not paying $150 to play something else.

Finally City Park golf is coming back. I miss the hell out of the East and West courses but at least we are getting golf back over there. I know the North is still there but its just not the same.

This. Its still City Park golf, if the green fees are $100 or over it will be a disaster.

I'm gonna play it.
If there is a big tournament there, I'm wondering where people are gonna park.
I'm guessing a shuttle from Marconi.

You don't think a course that could host a major would do well in NO? I think tourism alone woul float it

I've only played a few of his courses. Echelon in the ATL area is only $75 and its on 600+ acres.
