Yeah, that actually makes sense.

Speaking of companionship, it's interesting that the salt vampire spared McCoy after finding it liked his "stronger" feelings for Nancy, then discarded Crater.

This is also consistent with the creature's killing spree - as it used its telepathic abilities to stalk, camoflauge and target its victims - it makes sense these strong feelings of the terrified victims might have been pleasurable.

If we accept that the creature was of humanoid intelligence, it could easily have negotiated a surrender in exchange for a lifetime supply of salt. Probably immunity, too, as it was only acting naturally. However, as someone suggested earlier, it makes sense that the creature developed a taste for killing (or renewed it, if that was part of its past).

Last chance for "The Man Trap" - next up "The Naked Time" - one of my favorite episodes.

*THE NAKED TIME*

One of my favorite episodes, so let's get the bad stuff out of the way, first. The hokey environmental suits and the gratuitous ripping of Kirk's shirt (by McCoy) for the dramatic hypo spray injection near the end.

The rest of this episode is golden. Bruce Hyde (Riley) delivers one of the best, most memorable guest performances in all of TOS. The wonderful bit of overacting by Nimoy and Kirk, as they struggle to resist the effects of the intoxicant, culminating with Spock b-slapping Kirk across the conference room table.

Barechested Sulu, armed with a fencing sword, is one of the iconic images of the entire show.

According to Shatner, Nimoy did the scene where Spock struggles with his human and Vulcan halves in one take, unscripted, because it was at the end of the production day. I'd always suspected it was improvised.

Great episode. The disease was an inventive way of getting inside the characters' minds. So good, it was reused by TNG in "The Naked Now."

Too bad Riley didn't become a regular.

Great scene. So was Kirk's talking about the Enterprise. "Now I know why it's called she.". And "Never lose you. Never."

The time travel at the end seems a bit out of place, but apparently the original plan was to have this be a two-parter concluded with "Tomorrow is Yesterday".

He was under consideration to join the regular cast, as was Stewart Moss (Joe Tormolen). They were apparently well liked enough to come back, Hyde reprised his role as Riley in "The Conscience of the King" and Moss returned as Hanar in "By Any Other Name".

Tormolen was also the only Lieutenant JG to appear in TOS - thus rendering his admonition to full lieutenants "You don't rank me!" as technically incorrect.

Hyde, particularly, as well as Moss gave spirited performances - some of the best in TOS, IMHO, along with Carmel, Campbell and Montalban.

my initial notes on the Naked Time:

•This man has clearly never read a thing about biosuits and germ theory…he just sticks his hand in the hood to smell it. Way to go Lt. Scientist…
•Why is McCoy operating in the dark?
•1701 is the hottest ship in the fleet. Everyone is constantly sweating.
•Nichelle Nichols is built like a brick shithouse. #cangetit
•Parts of this episode remind me of the Blue Boy episode of Dragnet. Older writers trying to make some sense out of the emerging hippie culture. Love Mankind written on the wall, and such.
•Rand can do it all. Bring meals, drive the ship, later on she’s a communications officer. The whole package, that Janice…
•When Kirk and Uhura have the exchange where she yells at him and he apologizes, I see where the writers of the reboot got their idea to flesh out a back story that would allow the two to have that kind of exchange without it being a complete breakdown of military discipline.
•I can’t change the laws of physics!
•And here’s the first time (pun!) they go back in time.

I like this episode alright enough, I suppose. It’s certainly full of some of the more iconic elements of the show. It’s not one that I usually re-watch.

It's pretty fantastic that Nimoy could do that scene unscripted so early in the production run. To have that kind of a grip on such a complicated character shows a great deal of talent.

Time travel became more difficult as the series went on, morphed into the movies and transitioned into the Next Generation.

My favorite quote (in its entirety, of course) in all of television/film history.

I've got to have 30 minutes.

(Scotty is also the center of my 2 favorite scenes in all of TOS - the bar scene in Tribbles and when he drinks ole boy under the table in By Any Other Name - coincidentally, the one where Moss returns as Hanar. Maybe Scotty is my favorite character? After all, I did build a replica of the access tube to recreate the "reverse the polarity of the magnetic probe" scene from That Which Survives when I was 6.)

I understand this, but, really, that exchange was pretty realistic. The one where discipline broke down was when Kirk attacked Spock (which he would do again, with glee, on other occasions.)

I remember in DS9 where the Time Cops complained about Kirk having been the worst offender. There must have been some regulations promulgated after "The City on the Edge of Forever" because Bones destroyed the Federation.

Picard must have gotten a warning after the Borg did the same thing.

This was a pretty big debut for Nurse Chapel, setting her up as a possible love interest for Spock. Perhaps his own version of Yeoman Rand - a forbidden love.

It never really materialized, though. Other than a few memorable moments like getting soup thrown at her in "Amok Time" or pining after Corby in "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" Chapel is little more than background scenery in sickbay.

Even Barrett herself said she disliked the character. Its a shame something more interesting wasn't done with her down the line.

She had some choice moments in "And the Children Shall Lead" and "Return to Tomorrow", but as the only non-bridge secondary cast member, she suffered a fate similar to Uhura, Sulu and Chekov did.

There wasn't even an engineering equivalent for Chapel, but I consider Scotty the "+1" in my 3+1 figuring of the primary cast, so he may account for both spots. I'm certain that was difficult, because the very next spot would have had to be a guest star. As it is Scotty split time between the bridge, engineering AND was the main transporter operator for much of the series (it was very uncommon for anyone other than Scotty, Spock or Kyle to beam anyone, anywhere, in TOS.)

Forgive the long post or don't. My quick catch up. I'll post two reviews per post until I catch up.

Frist off, I had no freaking clue Lucille Ball had anything to do with this show. Shocked me to see how many great shows she and Arnaz produced from Desilu.

I grew up loving the show so don't get to upset. Only fair I give the show the full TigerMyth treatment.

Where No Man

Spock popping off about check mate then being befuddled on the very next move is weak. Then a little continuity glitch mentioning possible human blood in his ancestry.

Spock looks a touch yellow. More than a touch.Makeup and hair looks weak on many of the cast. Scotty looks like he had a bender before heading to the shoot.

Glad they replaced Cantankerous Doctor with better Cantankerous Bones.

Scotty, Old Doc and Sulu sure are standing close to each other. Too close. People don't stand like that when they have room to spread out.

Two hot blondes. Looks like Mitchell {Riker} is hitting one of the blondes because he is holding her hand as they move through the cloud. She seems like she is asleep. She was probably wondering what the hell she got herself into on this oddball acting gig.

They sure need probes. Flying into the purple cloud with no info probably wasn't the best idea.

I remember this episode well, but what I didn't remember was the terrible acting and direction from almost everyone.

Bit of a weak ending. He had his power back so he should have been able to toss the rock off with no problem. Why exactly did Kellerman die so easily?

The Corbomite Maneuver

I must not have liked this one when I was a kid because I don't remember it at all. Holy smokes. Is this really the second episode. The change in style and acting is noticeable. Especially Spock. His makeup is better and he seems to be far more relaxed than in the first episode.

Interesting...the United Earth Ship...no mention of the Federation yet. Ha! The alien ship is from a Federation.

Bailey is annoying me. Wish he would hurry up and red shirt. It must be coming.

Did they have the mini-skirts in the first episode? I remember Kellerman wearing pants. Now all the dames is wearing minis.

OK, I do remember that ugly Alien dude.

A bit jarring to have Spock mention his Earth mother one episode after joking about possible human ancestry.

Ok. Yup. Now I remember this one. Good old Clint Howard.

Please explain to me how Clint Howard's teeth are as screwed up as a young child as they are as an adult. Did he freaking teethe on railroad spikes?

Mudd's Women

I see Mudd is wearing the earring on the left side so he isn't light in the loafers per the right ear rule prevalent at that time. That is one big arse ugly earring.

Not as big a fan of this one as the rest of you. Seems more like a filler episode than anything else. I like Mudd but I think he is better the next time we see him.

Ok. The BS meter is pinging hard. So she took jello and still changed back to being hot?

Haze quoted...

“You would never see TNG having an episode like that. Too damn PC and feminine.”

This quote is false. Naked now??? You got the Captain nearly hitting some Crusher and you have Yar hopping on a fully functional data. Sex was often used in TNG. Riker nailing the hot red head. The alien chick that made Riker have sex with her before she would help him escape. I was disappointed Crusher wouldn't go in for the Trill Lesbian action.

Definitely a different tone in this one after 2 serious episodes. As I said last episode. Nimoy really changed his acting ability from the pilot. Actually wonder if he took lessons or if the director actually started directing.

The Enemy Within

Not looking forward to this one. Yes, it is a classic. Classic over acting or at least how I remember it. As a kid I was all about the monsters or alien ships. Didn't like this character driven episodes.

Wow. Forgot all about that unicorn dog thing.

BS meter again. How did the transporter activate on its own?

Why was Bones using a hand held vacuum cleaner on that ensign’s hand? Oh wow, looks like he just sprayed it with the same bottle of red crap, the counselors would spray on our bug bites at camp in the 70s.

If Evil split of the Cap is over the top acting evil then shouldn't the good half be over the top gay and merry?

Ohhhh...Yeoman Rand looking fine from the backside.

Wow. That was some seriously bad fake blood. Looked purple.

I see some were surprised by the aspects of the attempted rape. A lot has changed since the 60s. Heck I remember seeing marital rape on a soap opera in the 80s. Marital rape was LEGAL in the 80s. Different times.

Whoever tossed out the design of the original phaser deserves a medal. Those things looked terrible in the first episode.

Glad to finally see the classic. I had one of those bad boys. Had a flashlight attached to it and a very annoying beep.

So far all of the secondary characters have glass jaws. One punch and they are down for the count.

Why hasn't Sulu used a phaser to heat up some rocks like they did a 1000 times in TNG?

Or as already stated, how about shooting a shuttle down to pick them up. Ha! There goes Sulu with the phaser to heat the rocks. Thanks Sulu!

Spock cheated. He clearly sighed with relief when Kirk was back in one piece.
