Sufjan Stevens - Illinois... will it have long-term relevance?

One of my favorite albums of the 2000s, not really like any other album of the time. A true concept album. For me, I don't listen to it very often, but when I do I tend to listen to the entire thing.
Some tracks:
Come on Feel the Illinoise
Jacksonville
Decatur, or Round of Applause for your Stepmother

definitely. it will eventually get labeled as a "culte favorite" or something like that, which will make it live on, that and its songs are genuinely good. "John Wayne Gacy Jr." is just an amazing piece of singer-songwriter prowess. Plus the compositions are baroque and orchestral, separating it from basically all other forms of indie-pop out there (besides, say, Owen Pallet's stuff).

Kind of what was in my head, you just put it into words much better.

yep, and slightly off-topic, the song Vesuvius (of Age of Adz) is mesmerizing, especially with really good noise-cancellation headphones.

it's a bit like an overstufed rap mixtape clocking in at +70 minutes with 22 tracks, so it can be daunting to give it the traditional album experience. once you isolate the best tracks I find them undeniably good. try out
John Wayne Gacy, Jr.
Jacksonville
Casimir Pulaski Day
Chicago
as well as any other chunes mentioned in the OP

I'll do that and upon further reflection, I do remember Chicago being the one track that jumped out at me...

Yeah, the standouts are truly outstanding. And Chicago IMO is the biggest standout.

I think Seven Swans is better.

Casimir Pulaski Day is my favorite off the album.
Just a great song.
Just a great song.

I like all of Sufjan's work but Illinois will likely always be seen as his best work. It's a very cohesive and complete album that will stand the test of time, easily.

Fun fact: Michigan was released exactly ten years ago today.
