re: What is wrong with the team hitting?

I just see most LSU hitters trying to pull the ball. I thought the general practice was "go with the ball." During Bregman's at-bat in the 8th yesterday, he got an outside breaking ball and pulled it to the SS. Isn't that the scenario with guys on and IF shading, that you go opposite field....just knock it between 1B and 2B...i thought that was fundamental hitting and LSU just doesn't seem to take the same approach up and down the lineup....minus Laird...
Easier said than done. Especially if he was fooled by the pitch and was out in front. this would make him pull it. doesnt have to do with fundamentals.

I agree with you that our approach at the plate sucked like it has for a while, but to discount the level of competition in Omaha is a little off base IMO.
I didn't mean to discount the competition. They were quality pitchers. I was just saying that they werent anything greater than what LSU has seen all year. I don't think anyone would argue they werent near the level of Gray or Rodon from NC State, though.

Making adjustments and being patient at the plate when you are slumping have everything to do with fundamentals.....2 things Bregman did not do in Omaha.

I noticed we were swinging at a lot of pitches outside the strike zone in Omaha. Maybe just over eager/excited instead of being patient at the plate.
I was surprised to hear Mainieri say in a post-game interview that he thought the team was "too tentative" at the plate. I thought we were too aggressive and failed to constantly let the pitcher off the hook by swinging at the first pitch that came along and popping it up.

Oh hell no....but I think we can all agree that they were world's better than aTm's Mengden and he shut us down too.

According to some rantards the issue is not Sanchez.

This is true.
I love how others simply want to say - LSU choked - because that makes them feel better - nobody beat them, they just beat themselves...(this is what psychologists say children tell themselves so they won't cry.)
LSU faced two elite teams and great pitching and got beat mound vs. plate...plain and simple...and this isn't some old LL ballpark where every pop-fly goes out...you need to really knock the ball...and they couldn't...relying on HRs is not much of strategy in today's game anyways.
UCLA was used to winning pitching duels - LSU was not.

Yeah, if hitting were this easy, succeeding 30% of the time wouldn't make you one of the best hitters in the game.

Yea definitely not what I saw but I guess thats why he is the coach and I ain't.

I'd agree with that.
Big stage, big atmosphere, nerves. It happens.

I laugh everytime I see this. The cluelessness is taking over the Rant.

I think it more of tentative by not having plate discipline, ie swinging at bad pitches and breakdown of fundamentals.

Come on man, in the UCLA game, there was a lot of this, or at least it appeared to be. When you pop up that many balls, you are either not staying on top of high pitches, or trying to elevate the ball. I definitely think there were some guys trying to follow Katz.

LSU had 10 hits against UNC. That wins most games.
The clutch hit didn't happen.

That doesn't equate to "swinging for the fences". That's just a dumb comment made by a guy that has no clue what he's talking about. Everytime we hit a fly ball that doesn't mean we were trying to hit a homerun.

or trying to elevate the ball
We weren't trying to elevate the ball. We were swinging at high fastballs and couldn't get our hands on top of the baseball. Just like a sinker ball pitcher gets a lot of ground outs, a guy that throws high fastballs gets a lot of fly ball outs. Plutko was better than us that night. It happens.

Just because you hit fly balls dose not mean you are trying to hit home runs
Also pitchers use more than velocity to fool hitters.
It's called deception

It's said that hitting a baseball is the most difficult skill in all sports; not surprisingly, giving hitting instruction is also one of the most difficult skills a coach has to learn--was JAVI know as a great hitter. Teaching baseball hitting is difficult because it's
both mental and technical. Not to mention the quality of pitching we are sure to face during the post season.
Unfortunately we didn't have the mental part under control
for the last 2 games. What bothers me the most is that our
Kids were not skilled at all taking the pitch the other way.
I blame JAVI for that. And with 2 strikes we are still swinging
for the fences-- that's not going to work.

It's called pressure. Get to the postseason and some can't handle the heat. Maybe it's the way Mainieri prepares them or maybe it's just the players not having the balls to step up. Never thought I'd see Bregman cave like he did the last two weeks. 2-21 is just down right sad.
Bregman never hits the first pitch which was usually right down the middle, even the second. In this CWS against great pitching, that was a mistake cause he was hitting at junk after going behind. Then, his swings were very weak indeed. Cant take the pressure!!!

or maybe he's just true freshman college player. Crazy how relaxed the team played in 2009. Guess it was the omaha experience. Also helped it was in Rosenblat
Rhymes is the one who blew it this weekend. Not sure what a coach can do to prepare him better, and you can't bench a .350+ hitter.
I probably would have switched Bregman and Jones in the lineup

Baby Sam - I said the same thing after Bregman's AB. We were not going with the pitch and punching the ball to the opposite field. Damn double plays and pop ups/pop flys killed any momentum. I was stunned by the lack of hitting discipline from some of our usually reliable hitters. Just made me ill. I'm sure our guys were much more down on themselves, so I'll let them learn from this and get better next season.
