What's the importance of a battery swap? Can users maintain more than one battery at a time?
I know Tesla makes electric cars (and Fisker makes Volt-like plug in hybrid) and is one of Elon Musk's companies but other than that I'm not familiar with either the corporate structure or the products.
How do you purchase the electricity ahead of time? Are you talking about the use of their charging network?
I really like the Model S. Very sleek looking vehicle, and with a 208 mile range, it's very practical for an electric car. I'm not surprised it has been matching Volt and Leaf sales this year. It looks like it should cost twice what they charge for it.
On the other hand, the lack of charging stations along interstate highways would have me going for something like a Volt instead with a gasoline engine to use as backup.

Instead of waiting 30 minutes at a charging station, you may only have to wait a few minutes while your discharged battery gets swapped with a charged one and be on your way.

You pay a little bit extra for the "supercharging" option and you can use Tesla's supercharger network free of charge for life.
There were some rumors floating around that Tesla may "unlock" the supercharging option on all of their vehicles through a software update down the road. Who know's if there's any truth to that though

Depending on a few factors, it has the potential to remove the biggest knock against electric cars (range and charge times).
