I actually didn't watch the third set, and some articles I've read indicate he appeared to be having favoring one leg as the match progressed. But even if that's the case, that's no excuse. He was moving well enough to beat Steve Darcis.
Steve Darcis?
Steve Darcis?

I was just quoting the Washington Post article. From what I saw, he didn't appear to have movement issues. He had "can't seem to figure out what I want to do out here" issues. Maybe he should have played a tune-up. He seemed generally uncomfortable on the court, borderline perplexed.

It's all good, man. I'll get over it. I'm a Vol fan; I'm used to my favorite team (player) losing.

Boom. Rafa's career is confounding at times. I think the best explanation for last year and this year is he blew his wad at Roland Garros, came in unprepared, he always struggles with the slick grass in the first week, and he caught a couple of guys on fire.
Your explanation is absolutely correct. But Steve Darcis? It just doesn't make any sense.

i meant for the journalists. they were trying to find some reason for why rafa would lose...they can't just say he got outplayed because that would be impossible

Was just looking at the draw and saw Verdasco was unseeded. Man, how far has that guy fallen? Just a few years ago, he was playing lights out. His finals or semi finals match vs. Nadal in the AO was incredible. Has he been bitten by the injury bug?

Rafa lost... I love life today.

I don't know how match you guys were watching, but it was clear he was gimpy. Every time he was running forward he was obviously gingerly. Rafa wasn't even trying to stay in the match on the third set. He was clearly hurt. I've watched him for years, and I've never seen him move like that.
But Rafa is pure class and got mad when asked about his knee on the post game conference. He made no excuses.
I think raggedy Andy wins it this year, he looked great today.
And BTW a shout out to my girl Moninca Puig with the biggest win of her career. She is just 19 and she has a bright future. Pica power!

How much longer is Rafa going to be able to play if he takes roughly 9 months off and can still barely make it through the clay court season?

What about Wimbledon last year? Or FO in 2008? Or AO in 2010 and 2011? Was he more or less injured today than those other losses which were also blamed on injury?
ETA: Meant to reply to austingator, not barry.

I didn't see the match, but tennis.com had an article up earlier saying that Nadal didn't look gimpy until the third set. That being said, before the match even started, there was an article up about Nadal's prematch practice with anothe Spaniard and the article was talking about how good Nadal looked and how the author seemed a little suprised how hard of a prematch workout Nadal went through.
If Nadal was truly injured, then it seems like he must have tweeked something during the match, but it doesn't appear he was truly injured coming into the match.

Very good question. His body is not ready.

I'm legitimately concerned about his career

I didn't watch the third set, so I'll take your word for it. I thought he seemed fine in the bits and pieces I saw from the first two sets.
