Sega and Atari eventually went the way of the Dinosaur, and they weren't showing they outright hostility towards consumers that Microsoft is. When gamers shun the XBox1 in droves will that be the end of the XBox series as we know it? I could see Google or Apple joining the fray next time to complete with Sony.

For the reasons you listed? Of course not. Microsoft isn't Sega or Atari. The One could fail miserably (which it won't) and Microsoft would still pump hundreds of millions of dollars into the system without any problems. They're only a multibillion dollar company.

However, this will likely be the last generation for all consoles.

Within 3-4 years, APUs on notebooks will have the processing and graphical capabilities of the One and PS4. In 4-5 years, it will be common for players to stream their games.

"Xbox" and "Playstation" will become services, allowing you access to the latest games and entertainment from any device.

If it is, I don't think anyone would have predicted Nintendo outlasting them in the console arena

not so concerned about consoles, but rather.....will this be your last posts on the Gaming Board?

Microsoft is one of the richest corporations in the world, they determine their future.

Apple already tried, and failed

Xbone will be a huge success with the casual market. It will pick up the WiiU's slack. Consoles in general will be around a long time. The all in one home entertainment model is the future.
