Wife and I starting the Wire

Summer project is to completely watch the wire and sopranos front to end. Never seen one episode of each
Starting the wire today. What tips do you have or what should I know?
Is this a show that's slow and then gets good or is it money out of the gate? I've heard some people say on here that through the first half of season 1 it was pretty average.
To be fair my favorite show breaking bad started slow and I would have killed myself had I given up on it

Congratulations. You're watching the greatest thing to ever appear on television.

Watch carefully and let the storyline develop (don't rush it). Get familiar with the characters.

I wouldn't say "slow" but it develops over the course of 13 episodes. It's real serious drama. Don't expect shootouts and explosions every 10 minutes.

I was hooked from the beginning. Those that say it was average are either expecting something different or don't have patience.

I enjoy Breaking Bad myself but it isn't in the same league as The Wire.
Enjoy the series man. It's a wild ride. And remember, S3 and S4 are the masterpieces but S1 and S2 are critical to the importance of those two seasons. PAY ATTENTION and BE PATIENT. Every scene is important.

I did not really think it started slow, but I can see where people would say that. Like all shows when it first starts you have to develop characters and plots. Which at times can make it seem slow to start. But I guess I am also not the type of person that needs non stop action all the time. I like the way the story unfolds from each side which does not lend itself to non stop action.

I've tried getting into the wire twice. It was good, but at times I felt like I was watching it simply because it so highly acclaimed on here. Haven't made it past the first few episodes of season 3 yet. On the other end, I watched all of breaking bad in less than a month and couldn't get enough of it. Different strokes I guess.

It's threaded and some stories take multiple seasons to finally resolve.
Each year has a slightly different focus:
1 - Baltimore PD versus Barksdale Organization
2 - The Docks
3 - City Hall
4 - The School
5 - The Newspaper

I was told it started slow, but I didn't find it to be that. I liked it better than The Sopranos, for what it's worth.
I have The Wire, The Shield, Breaking Bad and Hill Street Blues as my top 4 hour-long dramas, ever, with The Sopranos and Mad Men coming in the next tier.
You should be fine.

As others have said, it's a character development/drama deal so it's not one of those crime dramas that throws a bunch of police chases in your face for the sake of action. I just finished up Season 2 myself and I was hooked by about the 3rd episode of Season 1.
I think if you're still not feeling it by the end of Season 1 then it may not be for you.

I thought the wire was decent. it is definitely overrated on here. 80% of the storyline was pretty ridiculous.

What?
I mean if 80% of the wire is ridiculous. What plot isn't?

in season 5? ok fair
Seasons 1/2 are based on real things. 3 completed the story
4 started a new one based mostly on politics and children in the ghetto. there wasn't anything out of the ordinary there
Melvin Williams, who plays the deacon, is one of the bases for Avon

***the actual Omar actually jumped from a higher point when he was leaving that apartment, but they made the jump shorter so it would be more realistic. also, the actual omar is one of the actors in that scene***

As already mentioned:
Patience.
It takes a little while to start getting everything straight in your head.
Once you get settled, it is not only better than any TV show you've ever seen, it's better than any movie you've ever seen, better than any book you've ever read, etc.
I sincerely believe it is the greatest piece of art that has ever been created.
I know that sounds like crazy talk but I honestly believe this.

Can this be watched anywhere other than Netflix mail? I don't have HBOGo either.

HBO is not an a-hole about access to HBOGO.
They don't have it locked down. I have friends and family that use my log in.
Just ask a friend that has HBO

The Wire is an awesome show that has a lot of realism to it. The show features an equal mix of law enforcement and the drug trade in Season 1, and each season after that has a different theme, for example, while the first season focuses on the drug trade, the second season focuses on crime at the Baltimore sea port, and each successive season focuses on different aspects of crime in Baltimore. Dominic West is great as Jimmy McNulty, and the rest of the cast deliver.
If y'all are also watching the Sopranos, be prepared for witnessing greatness each and every episode. Nuff said

If Season 2 seems slow and boring to you, don't give up. shite gets real.

I couldn't get into Breaking Bad or Sons of Anarchy. I don't watch a lot of tv shows. I even tried The Shield, it just pissed me off.
