The vast majority of people I serve are reasonable, and very little of my time is spent on things irrelevant to conservation or hunting opportunity. The same is true for the LDWF people dealing with this particular box-turtle issue.

I'm not as idealistic now as when I chose this profession in 1983. I've finally accepted that even if I do my job as objectively, responsibly, and competently as possible, I still have bosses that may not follow my recommendations and may direct me to do something different. But even in a Louisiana state agency, that has been rare.

I didn't mean to take us off-topic, and I really appreciate the kind words from Choupiquesushi and Jab528! Thanks guys ......

I just want to tell one related story before I end my extended lunch.

I was often accused of being the LWF Commission's "puppet" because I wouldn't support Arkansas' ban on spinning wing decoys at the Mississippi Flyway Council. Terry Denmon was a Commission member at the time and an owner of Mojo Outdoors, and thus I was always accused of not supporting AR's SWD ban because I was told to do so by Denmon.

However, that was not true. Terry Denmon never said a word to me about spinning-wing decoys. He never told me how to vote, what issues to support or not support, or how to conduct my Waterfowl Section business at any time.

I didn't support AR's spinning-wing decoy ban because it focused only on spinning wings, NOT the external-power source (which I think is the real issue). I believe that if a hunter wants to "spin" something to simulate a landing bird or use a wind-powered spinner, that should be legal. Those things were not legal under AR's ban.

Since I came to LDWF in 2005, the Commission has publicly voted against my recommendations (the last time was on the boundary of the West Zone near the AR border), but they have yet to tell me how to conduct my business.
