this is weird as frick to me.
Typically there's a huge incentive for this. Disney's stock is at an all time high and their profits are looking absolutely awesome right now.
What's the deal? Is there an upcoming purchase? I know the sports contracts (MLB, MNF, etc) are getting more expensive, but even factoring that in they're doing great.
So how much money are they saving by this? Let's say the 400 dumped have an average salary of 75k (on the high side IMO)....that only saves them 30 mil. that's a drop in the bucket to them. Just can't seem to find the motivation for them to be willing to do a layoff and face the bad publicity that comes with it.

I stated on page one that they gave them a nice severance package.
Doesn't change the fact that firing them was still a shitty move.
Sadly, I'm unsurprised by these sorts of responses on this site.

Apple is using loopholes in both Irish and American tax laws to avoid paying taxes on over two thirds of its business
there are provisions in the tax code that are being taken advantage of
every single person on this planet does what they can to minimize their tax obligations
Apple is smart

Fortunately, congress is looking into changing that in order to eliminate this sort of unethical behavior by Apple and other corporate offenders.
I call it evasion because, they are evading the payment of taxes. Yes, I'm well aware of the legal definition. The fact that they are able to manipulate a loophole doesn't make it right.

Exactly.
It's not like the severance is amazing. I've seen a lot better. Look at it from this stand point: Most people were probably there 5 years or less. So, that's only 10 weeks of pay. It takes a shitload longer than 2-2.5 months to find a job at times by the time people have to apply to online blackholes and deal with HR bullshite.

I hear enough people struggle with english on a daily basis. No more!

The horrible mismanagement of NBC has made GE make Columbia and Disney look like we'll oiled machines

but getting that kind of severance along with unemployment benefits is 1000000X better than what many people have had to go through during the recession

Right for who? They aren't doing anything unethical or illegal. Whether they know it or not, most people on this site are probably Apple shareholders in some form or fashion, they're doing right by us to keep their costs as low as possible.

ESPN is making money hand over fist but they paid too much for league rights (just to keep it out of play for CBS, Fox, and NBC's sports networks). So frick you, you're fired.
Capitalism, frick YEAH!

Two weeks per year of service is nice if you've been there for a while.
However, if you were a newer employee, it sucks.
And comparing it to the recession? OK. It sucks to get laid off. Period. Your comparison is like saying, "Oh, your arm got chopped off at the elbow? At least it wasn't chopped at the shoulder, like that poor Black Night dude."

no doubt. They didn't have to give shite.
I still wonder the motivation behind it?

It is unethical.
Maybe not to a person like you whose ethics are based solely on dollars and cents, but to others of us, it matters.
I bet you had no problem with the sweatshop deaths in Bangladesh, either.

Seems a bit crass to compare possible human rights violations to basic number crunching.
