Michu, the guy who signed in August for Swansea and made 42 appearances this season?

He's probably talking bang for buck, in which case that list is very accurate.

no one understands sarcasm. he went through a little drought during the second half of the season. I was only kidding guys geeeez. I remember him torching us in December
Posted on 5/21/13 at 2:18 pm to LSUSOBEAST1
the nastasic and rvp signings are the only thing that threw me off. santi was roughly the same price as nastasic. then his worst signings included two free transfers and a 2m...

Nastasic is also 20 years old and could potentially play in the league for the next decade. The price City got him at is absolutely unreal - he has nearly doubled his value in half a season. Cazorla is 28 and probably only has 2-3 years left at the level he's at.
Still accurate IMO.

That was the oddest bit of sarcasm I've ever come across, friend.
Although I thought to myself, "He surely knows that Michu played the whole year..."

Just like Arshavin. No one would doubt that Arshavin was one of the best transfers of 2008-09. Double digit goals and assists in his first season? That immediate value exceeds his transfer price. Cazorla was a steal. Whether he should be on some arbitrary list, I don't know or care. But he was one of the transfer moves of the season.

should I have added RvP too? or was it really that deep of a sarcastic comment?
and like I said earlier, beast, don't really have a problem with the list. just seemed some odd criteria in the way it was constructed. michu is older as well but super cheap. rvp is older and his price was very high for someone of his age and contact status, but he was absolutely fantastic. benteke and nasty nastasic were very good, gotten at great prices, and ones for the future. lukaku was great but has no future with WBA. just seems like their was no real rubric.
santi was a steal when he was bought, lived up to the hype, and should impact our side for the next few seasons. i'd personally argue he should be on there. not a huge travesty though.

I'm sure the guy Boswinga replaced was way better than him... it is QPR, after all

The list is clearly arbitrary, but it still holds value.
The author clearly valued three major areas (probably in this order):
1. Price (bang for buck)
2. Future potential (except Lukaku)
3. Immediate contributions
He compromised a bit in terms of the numerical ranking, but it remains fairly accurate IMO.
FWIW I probably wouldn't have Cazorla in my top 5 transfers of the season, though I value future potential very heavily.

well, that's the thing. in a list of 5, he's got huge exceptions to two of his criteria.
I would also point out that whether he himself continues this performance for years to come for us, his introduction to our side, which desperately needed experienced offensive talent, kept us in the CL which most certainly affected our future.

Yea I considered that. It's tough. There was an exceptional amount of great transfers this season, particularly of young players.
Coutinho and Sturridge have both been absolutely wonderful since January, and Hazard had a terrific season as well.

Exactly. His influence from the beginning cannot be underrated. He was exactly what we needed, much like Arshavin was exactly what we needed when we bought him.

That rationale can be applied to every player on that list, maybe with the exception of RVP and United.
I mean, without Cazorla Arsenal still have £20m to spend on another top player. Highly doubtful they could have signed someone who would have replicated Cazorla's accomplishments this season, but that's still a good bit of cash for a player.
What player could Swansea have bought for £2m that would come anywhere near what Michu has done? frick, they made it into Europe and his value has increased exponentially. They could sell him today and fund an entire squad.
What about West Brom? Lukaku was a tremendous part of their fantastic season - doubling the next highest scorer on that squad. All on an almost free loan. Unbelievable business.
Aston Villa? They would be relegated without Benteke.
Etc.

i would point out, we paid considerably less than 20m for santi. not sure there's anyone out there with his talent, in his prime, under a long-term contract we could have gotten for 12m (to 15m, depending on where you read). we got lucky as frick that malaga sold him. santi was a steal when we got him (as Pellegrini called it, "an unthinkable gift"). to me, that makes it more impressive than anything. all the people we listed had incredible impacts on their clubs. michu and rvp were out of contract, which affected their price. just my personal reasons why thinking santi should be top 5. again, no bad arguments for any listed or hazard.
Posted on 5/21/13 at 7:41 pm to Friend of OBUDan
How much? Transfer market had it at £20m.
Posted on 5/21/13 at 7:52 pm to LSUSOBEAST1
arsenal doesn't ever release theirs, but it was definitely less than 15m. telegraph, mirror said 12m. we paid in cash, up front.
Posted on 5/21/13 at 8:07 pm to Friend of OBUDan
Without Santi I'm not sure we would be competing for the CL. Considering his price was closer to 10m, he was a steal. Not on Michu's level of a bargain, but for a world class player who was relatively unknown outside of Spain, Santi was certainly a massive steal. That's not to discount the other excellent transfer deals that were made this season. But there is no player we could have gotten for that price who would have impacted the team as much.

The Nastasic deal was fantastic for City but they payed a whole lot more than €15 million.
They paid Fiorentina Stefan Savic plus €15 million. After the season Savic had with the Viola, they could sell him for another €15 million right now.
