I've said this before but it's something that can't be said enough. If you have a gun, write your serial numbers down and keep them somewhere safe away from the guns. Do it for every gun you have no matter the value and while you are at it don't forget TVs, generators, optics, everything. I've recovered numerous guns the past week and they will never be returned to the owners because they didnt have a serial number for it. I also can't charge anybody for the crime if I can't link a victim to it.

in your experience, how often do stolen guns get recovered by owners?

I scratched all of mine off. Should still be easy to recognize though, they are the ones with no serial numbers.

Good advice. I'll add take pictures of them and store them on your computer or a photobucket account. Easy to do with a smart phone and you will always have them with you. Good to give to a detective that is checking pawn shops too.

Funny how it worked out with my cases, the victims that helped me help them......always found their cases at the top of my to do lists.

Nothing worse than getting a case of a " stolen 12 ga pump". Or " nickel played 357".

Man I'm glad someone brought this up. Can't tell you how many times I come across property that I know damn well is stolen, but doesn't come back as stolen because of no serial numbers.

I was thinking the pictures would be wonderful and then I realized that my SO does not have a clue about my gun inventory. Being I have never downloaded a picture I dont think I want her to do it for me. I would hate for her to get custody of my babies. I will up date my gun list Thanks for reminder.
