I compared it to chains first.
The point is local sandwich shops should be a viable option. Butcher, Steins and Lola, Martin's Wine are only $2 bucks more than a chain - though not as convenient. Yep. Within 3 miles of the office we have Firehouse, Panera, Blimpies, Quiznos,Jersey Mike's,and of course the obligatory Subway. Firehouse finishes 3rd because of the condiments bar.
Local mom and pop sub shop here blows them all away but their service is slow so the chains have become necessary evils.
