I would love to run a marathon with a dog. That would be interesting. I know Vizslas are up for it.

What in the hell is a vizslas?
My father has English Pointers and they run circles around GSPs.

Great looking dogs, that have breeders that are very selective in who gets to buy dogs. They don't have the endurance or drive of the other bird dogs I have been around. They might be fine for an open field but they can't bust brush all day...

man.... the ones i've had the pleasure of being around were a little hectic.... great dogs, but i was given advice by dog people I trust to go with the GSP b/c it was a little more laid back. that being said, i could have been misinformed, but these were people who have been around many dog breeds for many many years... The Vizsla was the dog I wanted originally...

If that breed has never competed in Grand Junction, TN, I don't see the reason behind having him.
Other that having a nice dog to look at.

Not as high strung is not the same as drive and endurance. I have seen more than a handful in the fild, including AKC master hunters, and there is a noticeable drop off from other bird dog breeds. They hate to see other bird dogs show up at their events.
This is not to knock the dogs, it is just a fact of a difference in hunting. Just like many pointers have more range and speed than most shorthairs; vislas are just in a different league when it comes to hunting...

What hunting situation would be its niche then?
Posted on 4/30/13 at 9:46 pm to wickowick
Yeah they changed their club rules on events back when we pulled that sweep....with a 5 year old lil choupique handling....
Vizslas not in same endurance or electricity as gsp and ep
Not close.....I have not seen a V that can effectively cover 2/3 ground of most ep or gsp

The breed originated in Hungary, perhaps something there...

In not saying a GSP can't hang for a little while, but when you hunt west Texas GSP don't have the range. We hunt on horses, thats the only way to keep up with Pointers.
That's not an insult. I love GSPs and their versatility

Having 30k acres of prime quail real estate is a good reason to have dogs with wheels and horses to keep up. I wish I had that problem...

We hunt near Paduch, Tx. Excluding last year, the previous 5 years were very tough. To a point where we almost stopped going.
Last season was really enjoyable though, because it seemed like things have turned around. We saw birds in good numbers. They have been getting good rains too, which is a huge factor in a good brood success rate.

man.... wish I had a place the do some bird hunting. When we go to the fields that fricker points on dove and other birds feeding all the time. But, I don't so we are going to do some duck hunting! He is responding well to the retrieving. He can be a shite head, but he is hard not to like.
and just to check.... they might be fricking crazy, but don't have the overall endurance of the GSP?

Oh I only bet when I know I will win
But my gsp covers some ground..
His line has played that game at the highest level and won
But I'll put my 14 year old up against anyone shooting
