quote:Right. Projected as a solid starter with low upside but almost no downside. You can't get safer than that.
Our pic at 15 is the very essence of a "safe pic"
Jones is full out boom or bust both because of medical concerns and poor work ethic.
So to answer the other guys question, no I would not feel better with Jones in the least. Very likely he wouldn't even start. Sounds like the Saints agree with that as they had him rated much lower than Vaccaro.
I'd much rather a guy at the weakest defensive spot last year who is projected as a solid and safe pick than at a position we have tons of potential at who is a boom or bust prospect.
I'm just disappointed we didn't get a top 3 LT, but we had no shot at that so this really was the next best option.

In the end it has nothing to do with KV as a player. I think his seeking is a good but not superstar player. However if Jarvis jones does in the NFL what he did in college then we will look like asshats. If jones is just pretty good but one of our three big question mark OLBs don't pan out, we will looks like arse hats. It is a lot harder to make a impact at safety these days.

if you keep a sinkas as a pet and it gets nervous, you can calm it down if you pat yasinkas

I am not saying its impossible but there are a lot more pass rushers who make big impact than there are safeties .
You would never rather have earl Thomas than. Lay Matthews or Aldon Smith

The one who played on a bad defense had a good front 7 but poor back 4(outside of Woodson a couple of years).
Hmmm, maybe that front 7 myth isn't as true as everyone makes it out to be.
Think of the Ravens in recent years. Once their secondary started to deteriorate their defense started slipping and they had great pass rushers.
The Steelers are a completely different team without Polamalu, and they have great pass rushers.
Maybe secondary players can make a huge difference in this league. Maybe Vaccaro can and maybe he can't, but to say he can't because he is a safety is blatantly false.

The seahawks have pass rushers and try also have two amazing cornerbacks. Earl Thomas isntthe reason why Seattle is good.
Devin McCourt had the most pick of any safety and NE gets shredded in passing game

Meh, had we taken Jones his article would have sounded something like this..
"Saints take a pass rushing linebacker who has question marks while they still neglect to address the safety position".
Exactly.

Everyone will trash pat because he's telling them what they know but don't want to hear
We passed on an awesome pass rusher, the best one from the toughest conference in America for a safety with 5 career interceptions who played on a dreadful defense

Agreed with all of that Fox except the "played on a dreadful defense" part. Your playing the guilt by association card and if you go there alot of off and def talent would not be drafted for that very reason.
Good talent plays on bad teams.

Great talent will elevate a unit. There is no justification for taking KV over JJ. Pass rushers are a premium. We're transitioning, we have not one proven guy, and we were historically dreadful. Where do we begin? Safety with a top 5 talent pass rusher in the board. This is why our defense sucks and why it will continue to suck.

Safe pic vs risky pick with more upside and paying 1st round money and having no second pick and JJ having possible degenerative neck problems and less than stellar work ethic in college are just a few "justifications" that come to mind.

So how do you measure how much worse Texas would have been without Vicarro?

No risk no reward. The entire draft is a risk. Pass rushers, especially productive ones like JJ who played against pro talent, are infinitely more valuable than safeties.
I like KV, he's an upgrade but you have to look at the opportunity costs. If he's Ed reed and JJ is a bum or even middle of the road, ill gladly eat some HP

If you sent KV to Georgia and put JJ on Texas. Do you think Texas' defense would've improved? If yes, ask yourself why.
Posted on 4/28/13 at 12:49 pm to DelU249
If you sent JJ to almost any team they would improve.
I'm not doing this again.

Jeezus christ Fox.
We all wanted JJ for the most part. This debate has been beat to death.
The SAINTS had concerns. They know they needed help rushing the fricking passer and still choose to pass on him. They had concerns. You don't. We get it my friend.

Like I tried to post the other day, reasonable minds can disagree. The guys who actually made the decision have a hell of a lot more invested in the decision than we do. We'll see what happens. I'll be happy if KV comes in and makes a substantial contribution regardless of what Jones does in Pittsburgh.
