I totally agree with that.

who?
Ford, ware, Faulk, Simon. Some would argue Montgomery as well. It just seems that these guys guys got some bad information. I understand the running back log jam argument, and like I said, only time will tell how any of it works out for any of these guys.

I don't think you understand what any of this means.
No, I clearly understand contracts in the NFL, apparently you dont. 1st/2nd round picks have a good bit of GUARANTEED money built into their contract, which as you said, you get regardless of any outcome. Hence, guaranteed money. Later round picks do not get this luxury as you said they get...

Late round picks will get some signing bonus
And it's usually crap. I mean sure, you could live well off half a mil for a while, but that's not exactly...

just not as much
It's way, way, way, way less. Life altering money in 1st/2nd round GUARANTEED vs. a singing bonuses which if you get maybe 1 season in and cut you wont exactly be sitting on a gold mine for a long time.

I'd still like you to explain why you think he would play well if he stayed at LSU and won't if he's drafted in the say the 5th round? Cause it stands to reason if he played well at LSU that he would also play well in camp and as a rookie.
He could play awesome in camp and hell, be a starter if he's that good. Guess what? His initial contract will still be shite compared to a 1st or 2nd rounder which could even sit behind him with millions guaranteed to them while he signed a contract with $400k as a bonus.
The point here is the initial "Safe" money. If he doesn't work out, he's not left with bundles of money ad a late round pick. If he doesn't work out as a high round pick, he still has a pretty nice chunk of change. He only has that second opportunity if he came back for another year in college though.

only he would have one less year of getting paid and be one year further from his potential 2nd contract.
So once again, sure, he could lose a few hundred thousand by coming back to school and end up right where he is at now. But he also has great potential. Millions of dollars up front potential. Money potential that even IF he doesnt get a 2nd contract, he's not going to have to be getting a real-world job shortly after the NFL.

Maybe to you $400K is "nothing" but to most of us it's a decent amount of money.
The non guaranteed part just means if they are cut, they don't get the full value of the contract. So if you sign a 4 year deal and get cut after 2 years you don't get the full contract. You do get to keep what ever signing bonus you had. Which for late round picks is much less than first rounders obviously, but it's still 6 figures at least. So if he is drafted and signs a contract he will get a good bit of money. Because rookies in generally make much less, teams do like to keep them on the roster. A player has to be really shitty to get cut in camp as a rookie but even then he gets to get is signing bonus.
You are acting like if a player is not drafted in the 1-3 that he has basically no shot of making it out of camp. Sure a higher percentage of late round picks get cut, but many stick around for a couple of years. They will give rookies every chance they can to make the team since they do get paid less.
I still have yet to see you explain why you think he would play well coming back, but won't in the pros?

Here's an example for you. The Browns took Ryan Miller G Colo in the 5th round with the 160th pick last year. He signed a 4 year deal for $2.278M with a $178000 Signing bonus (which is his to keep). The base salary escalates each year. If he plays out the full contract, he makes the full $2.278M, while considerable less than Rieff's contract, still nothing to sneeze at. And if Miller becomes a starter in the next 3 years, he could earn a lot more.
Ryan Miller Contract/
The bottom line is, it would have been a risk for Faulk to come back, while theoretically he could have come back and been drafted in the first. He also could have hurt his stock or stayed about the same Looking at some 2nd and 3rd round picks from the link above, the money is not much greater.. Brandon Brooks a 3rd rounder in 2012 by Hou is not making much more than Miller. So unless you are a first round pick, the money is not much different. So coming back to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick would not make enough above a 5th rounder to make it worth while coming back.

Well the 5th round has come and gone. We are midway through the 6th. Do you have an example for a late 6th or 7th rounder.....or more likely a free agent?
Fwiw....ESPN rates 8 undrafted OTs higher than him. It looks like his name is not going to be called today. I hope I'm wrong. I hate it for the kid.
Edit: several OTs must have just come off the board. They currently have 3 OTs ranked higher than Faulk. There still is hope.

Maybe the Saints can grab him as a FA. Bad decision.
