I'd be fine with this..but I thought Vaccaro was more of a FS? I thought his strong suit was coverage at the S or nickel spot? Why would he be a SS who could come up support the run?

Because Patrick loves him some IAQ

He's good in run support as well, but the SS/FS differences are being blurred if not completely done away with. In my thinking you want your two best safeties on the field.

It would be wonderful to have two starting safeties that can cover
Agree, Patrick (welcome back, btw).
I think some people read that KV can cover, and automatically want to put him at FS. Having a SS that can cover would be a huge upgrade.
Putting Vaccaro at FS, would only upgrade one position, still leave a hole at SS, and waste IAQ. Putting Vaccaro at SS gives you a SS who can actually cover and come up and stop the run, and allows you to use IAQ at FS- who's shown he can actually make plays on the ball (2 INTs in limited playing time last year vs. Jenkins' 3 picks in 3 years as a full time starter).

This is not Madden. It is a pretty hard for a player to just move positions and be successful. Putting on 25 pounds in an offseason and being asked to compete at a position players have been playing all their career is a whole lot to ask!
First, I don't play Madden. Second - did you see how much Harper played in the box last year in the second half of games? He was always up at the line of scrimmage. He's been stopping the run all his career so I don't think OLB would be that big of an adjustment. in a 3-4 Defense OLB speed is exactly what we are going to need, and the transition will be asking most of our players to do different things than they've been accustomed to in the past.

It's one thing to be an in the box safety with actual linebackers and linemen taking on blocks. Harper is 200 lbs. He would have to at least pack on 20-25 lbs, and even then he'd be lite in the arse for an olb. Assuming he has the frame for it, what do you think that would do to his already limited speed?

I have seen him coming up in the box all his career. Harper has been good in run support, but also he is using his speed coming up from the safety position. In a 3-4 you hope your big linemen take up blockers, but as an OLB your are going to have big tackles coming to block you. Unless he puts on that 25 pounds you were talking about, and/or develops moves to shed the blocks he is going to spend a lot of time on his back getting direct attention from an Olinemen. If he puts on that 25 lbs it will likely be tough to keep the speed.

Admittedly, I'm a simple guy. I don't study film, as perhaps you do. When I think of Jenkins, the image that comes to mind is the game where he chased down a WR and prevented a TD, and the opponent didn't score. He hustles, and he has talent. He has not however lived up to expectations. When I think of Harper, I think of a good guy, a hard worker, good tackler, but who is always a step (or 2, or 3, or more) behind whomever he's trying to cover, and I remember him hitting Steve Smith late (like by 5 seconds late) in the end zone after he had been burned by him. Harper is past his prime and needs to go. Hire him as an asst. coach.

Maybe I see the glass half full. Yes he has always had hustle.
But the fact is the receiver was wide open and got behind the guy who is there to prevent that play.

Vaccaro at FS. Jenkins at SS or CB. Harper on sideline.

Would be a disaster. He would be worse at SS than he is at FS, and worse than Harper is at SS.

for the record, nobody on here studies film

And not Jenkins? Jenkins is the more useless of the two to me by a mile.
I think there is a pretty good chance that both of last year's safeties are gone by this time next year. I think they will both be on the team this year.

I'm on youtube taking notes right now.

Harper and Jenkins both suck. We need safeties more than any other position.

Hopefully the Saints and Jets make a trade.
Harper and Ivory for 2013 second round pick.

Neither Jenkins or Harper will be on the team next year:
- We save about 5 million letting Harper go next year, only 1 million if we do it this year
- Jenkins is a FA who has a cap number over 4 million this season

Please elaborate. Just curious why you feel this way.
