AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Defending champion Bubba Watson bristled Saturday at the idea a TV viewer can change the course of the Masters by calling in with their observations, saying "it shouldn't be allowed."
Watson, after shooting a third-round 70 on Saturday to climb to 2 over, said unlike the TV viewer who raised the issue of Tiger Woods' ball drop Friday with Masters officials, he wouldn't even know who to call if he saw someone breaking a rule.
"So I don't even know how these people get a number to call," Watson said. "And obviously they got more time on their hands than I do, because I don't know the number and I'm playing in the golf tournament."
Watson said he was glad Rule 33 was adjusted. Masters officials decided to penalize Woods two strokes instead of disqualifying him.
quote:
"So when somebody calls in like that, yeah, it shouldn't be that way, it shouldn't be allowed," Watson said. "Nobody calls in during the a basketball game or a football game."
quote:
Fred Couples called the rule adjustment "a blessing for every golf pro in the world."
"We all know that we'll get the same ruling if it happens to one of us," said Couples, 1 shot back entering Saturday's round.

I left out the biggest point of the entire article.
quote:
"It should protect us," Watson said of the rule adjustment. "The sad thing is the high-profile player gets the camera on him at all times. A guy could break a rule and not know he broke the rule. Like me today, there's no cameras on me today, everybody could care less what I was doing."

are those self-officiated sports?

I assume it was another member of the Augusta National or someone like that made the call?

Do you know how many times I'd have to call in during an Alabama lsu football game? I'd have that bitch on speed dial!

No, it's my understanding that there are normal f'n Joe Blows out there who literally spend their Thursdays-Sundays watching golf on TV and literally waiting for the opportunity to call in a rules violation. I'm actually not trolling you about this at all.
Its hilarious.

then he should be thankful that someone pointed it out to him, or does Bubba think this is ok?

Didn't this happen, viewer call in, to Dustin Johnson or something in the us open last year. Something like grounding his club out of bounds or something. Any arm chair fan that does that should have his arse kicked

PGA a couple of years ago, and I don't think it was a call in but an official watching. But there were also reports that players watching in the locker room immediately saw it as well.

Yep. On PGA radio there are people that call in each week and let the host know that they called in to let the pga know of rules violations or that certain guys should be fined for cursing during their round. It ridiculous that the PGA allows this bullshite in the first place.

i completely agree with him

I might be okay with this if every single shot was televised, but they are not. How do we know that Ben Curtis played a perfect round if we don't see all of his shots? Also, what is the purpose of rules' officials if they are making decisions, and then are undermined by a non-paid affiliate to the game that they officiate. Doesn't that tell us that these officials are poorly prepared and not very well certified?

If rules weren't selectively enforced, people wouldn't have to make phone calls.
