Mowers can be dangerous

We had a thread here about the mower throwing a small piece of metal and nearly killing the dog the other day...
Preface: I live "out of town"...out of a SMALL town. Houses are 1/4 mile apart, and we don't get much "action" out here.
Yesterday evening, I hear sirens and walk out to see FD vehicles zooming by, and stopping at the house down the road. I started walking down there, and an ambulance whizzes by, pulls in way off the side of the house in a small field. I stopped when I got to the neighbors, because I didn't wanna see what I knew it had to be. I saw the riding mower right by the ambulance.
Sure enough, the 5 yr old boy that lives there was running behind momma on the mower and she didn't know it. She stopped, he didn't, and his leg winds up under the mower. She must've disengaged the blade when she stopped, because he didn't lose it. He did wind up with two breaks in the leg, no skin from the knee down, and part of his heel missing.
Be careful and know your surroundings when you're mowing! Especially if you have kids or pets that might be in harms way.
Poor little guy, and I know his mom is devastated!

Damn. Good Thread, can never be too careful. I sometimes will drink a beer or two on the mower, hmmm... wonder if i should think twice about that with two little ones of my own.

I was thinking about this type of scenario yesterday. I was using the mower to pull a yardcart and the littel guy loves to ride with me across the yard. I never let him ride when mowing (blades engaged), or even paly outside while im mowing. Scary stuff. I feel bad for the mother.

I could not imagine how terrible she must feel as a parent. That is terrible.
Prayers to the family, whoever they may be.

what ya'll think about letting a little one ride on the mower on your lap while mowing? I don't see too much harm in that. I keep one arm around their waste locked and other arm to drive.

See my post above. I'm not comfortable having them ride with the blades engaged.

well if the mother had kid on her lap, that wouldn't have happened.

Things happen. I would ride my kids on tractor or mower but just riding. Not when mowing.

more dangerous, mower when mowing or 4 wheeler when 4 wheeling?

When I was little, I wasn't allowed outside while my father was mowing.

Both can be dangerous. I wouldn't ride them on a 4 wheeler when going over very rough terrain.
We all take chances. Just try to minimize risks.

Easily mowing is more dangerous.

Well i mean going 3-4 mph on a mower on flat lawn is certainly not that risky in compared to a 4 wheeler going 10 plus mph on any terrain. I don't know...

A friend of the family was killed when a lawn mower picked up a rock and the blade slung it, hitting her in the head. I never stand in the direction of the grass that is being ejected after this.

Volume is going to go with ATV. We see WAY more of those. The mower ones are going to stand out.

this happened a while back in Lacombe. My brother saw the pics and said it was gruesome. Brains were sucked right out.
Fell off with heart attack and the mower came back and got him. Final destination stuff right there.

I had a neighbor that had a 3 yr old on his lap mowing the grass and a stick flew up and hit the kid in the head and required 6 staples to fix. He was going around a tree and the blade threw a piece of wood about 1" long against the tree and it ricocheted off tree to kids head. Pretty freak accident but you never know when something like that might happen. Lucky it missed the eyes.

if you knew my kid, you'd know his odds are better on the mower than him running inside my house.
