My wife and I have been wanting to move out west for a while now. We're finally taking a trip out there this summer. We're going to CO with some friends who are from there. But, we plan to drive around and look at some other places.

Now, with all the gun talk lately, I've soured on CO, as beautiful as it is. Am I right in ruling CO out? I know that's really what my wife has in mind right now. I can probably sway her to another state though if I have a good argument.

Anyway, I like Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico, and maybe Utah and Arizona.

I'd like to hear any and all opinions of these states.

Even if they replace the current pols in 2014 and repeal the recent legislation, I would say CO is f'd from a freedom perspective.

I would stay away from NM and Arizona.

Shame about CO, though. Really an awesome place.

They are all beautiful. How long do you want your winter to last?

Idaho is great. Just have to pick an area that has jobs. Montana and Wyoming are incredible but limited careers fields.

Eta
Colorado is also beautiful. More economic potential there than most other rocky mountain states.

Utah for warm or Idaho for cold. Tough to beat those two in the lower 48.

I do too. Look at Sandpoint, Kellogg, Stanley, Wallace if you are interested in small towns

Bend Oregon is another great town, but its a bit larger.

Oregon might be a good option for you. There are two very different side of the state....west of the cascades (wetter, cooler summers) and east of the cascades(hotter and drier). It's beautiful like CA, great outdoors action and not quite as liberal as CA. (psst...stay away from CA, it'll make you crazy)

I live in AZ and you will not find a more friendly gun state.

Open Carry: legal
Concealed Carry: legal without a permit (permits available)

If you have a ccw, then you can purchase a firearm without a background check.

Lots of game for your hawk!

If you like the desert, Southern AZ is great, but its not all hot an dry here. The northern part of the state has some awesome mountains, etc.

It's a pretty great place to live!

There are plenty small towns all over that are nice places to live. My wife would move to Pagosa Springs Co in a heartbeat. Bozeman Montana is also a nice bigger town.

Wyoming I always liked Sheridan or Buffalo. They are small towns but big enough to have the comforts of life.

Wait, what's wrong with CO? It's absolutely amazing there... (note, I know nothing of the gun stuff)

You should take a heavy look into the Verde Valley area (Sedona, AZ) in northern Arizona... you can do it all there. Skiing at flagstaff an hour away, perfect temperatures most of the year because you're in a valley near the bottom of the rockies, a nice river stocked with rainbows for the kids, a decent bass lake or two within 20 minutes. Hiking, Rock Climbing, or even golfing to your hearts content within half an hour in any direction. Tons of Indian castles and shite. I could go on...

You are not right in ruling out Colorado. Would anyone in their right mind really not want to live in a state simply because of a gun law? Seriously? There have to be a million better things to take into consideration. I guess if you sold guns and they banned guns it would make sense. I'm assuming you'd be able to hunt there? Colorado is a great state, don't eliminate it.
