re: Generally speaking, you rather move up or down in the draft?

both ellis and dorsey were highly touted and ranked DT's in that draft. We were gunning for one of them.
SF has the 31 and 34 pick? Given the FOs history of defensive picks, we stand just as good of a chance at getting a solid starters in those slots and for less money. Last I checked, the cap was an issue.

I must have missed those seasons.
I was trying to be nice.
2010 he did okay, I thought.
the first few years he had some moments but he also got hurt and missed some games. That really kind of started the frustration towards him in my mind.

ellis went from being pretty good with potential to being below average and not declining.

Trade up to get a LT or down to accquire picks. I'm not nearly as sold on some of these defensive guys that may be there when we pick. The word I'll use is potential. Whether that is greatness or bust is yet to be seen.

We traded up for Ellis, but no one thought he'd be elite
I call total BS on that one. All the talk was that he and/or Dorsey would be the next Warren Sapp. My point being that he was a top 10 pick. Top 10 picks are supposed to be elite.
My point with Jenkins (top 15) and RRob is that they were our first round defensive draft picks. You don't usually give "elite" status to 4th rounders.
Only reason I added Sully is b/c we traded up to get him in the top 10. Point being, regardless of regime, the Saints constantly whiff on 1st round defenders. Guess that point missed you

maybe we bound to strike gold now.

Besides Bush and Jordan, none of our first rounders have been that good.
But the point is stupid. Should we just always trade out of the first round? The fourth round has treated us well in recent years. Should we trade around until we have 7 fourth round picks?

That's where I disagree. "Elite" is "elite" and not by where you are drafted. Elite would be closer to guys in the top 2 or 3 picks. Peyton Manning, Charles Woodson, Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson. Those guys are elite. Did anyone think Darius Heyward-Bey, Ted Ginn Jr, Troy Williamson or Blaine Gabbert was going to be elite because they went in the top 10?
And enough people are remembering Ellis being a great prospect so I will defer. I just remember being kind of "ehhh" with the pick.

I would much rather move down if your question is presupposing staying put is not an option. This class has less guaranteed studs, but way more solid players than usual. Mayock was saying Joeckel in a normal draft would be a 10-12th pick talent, but he is the safest , most established player. Normally you see significant drop offs in the talent level around mid to later 2nd round, and everything becomes more of a gamble/wait and see approach. This year the availability of "solid players" goes all the way to the mid to late third. Can't find a reason, given the current state of our defense, that we can justify moving up. If we had just one important position to fill that would automatically improve our defense I would be for it. But, we have multiple needs, so I would rather more picks.

I recall that draft much differently. Everyone was talking about Dorsey and Ellis as stars and top 5 players that year, and there was debate over which would be better. Maybe I am recalling wrong, but that's how I remember it.
Spot on.

I'd move down every pick of every draft if i could. even if you just grab a 7th round pick, moving down and getting extra picks will only help you.

I can't buy that. Why do you want a bunch of guys who may not even make the team if you have a chance to draft a Patrick Willis or JJ Watts?

Down! Guys like Jamie Collins, Xavier Rhodes etc have just as much potential as anyone!

Sun you are correct but chad does not give that option.
Like Ceasar...up or down this year.

What do we have to give up to move up two spots?
Posted on 4/8/13 at 8:11 pm to Suntiger
Blues had the same as I had that if Star falls he would not make it past carolina. He said moving ahead to 11 might cost us a 4th rd pick but we can't talk about this in chadsthread.
Posted on 4/8/13 at 8:11 pm to Suntiger
probably just a 4th or so. Doesn't help that it would be to two divisional teams.
Posted on 4/8/13 at 8:12 pm to Suntiger
C'mon man. Don't be retarded. I didn't say always trade out of the first. But name a time in the last 10 years that trading up in the first was worth it

I would make that deal in a heartbeat.
