heh, I linked the same video. Oh well.
RAM won't make a difference. For dedicated GPU gaming, system RAM is much more about capacity than speed. It's worth noting that the timings of DDR4 made them mostly slower than DDR3 until recently. The benchmark video was posted August of last year, when decent DDR4 had about 11-13ns access time, whereas even cheap DDR3 could be 9-11ns.

I'm sure that the performance is better on z170 and ddr4. But how much are we talking? If it's only ~5 fps then I'm not so big of an enthusiast that this will sway me.
eta: i'll watch the video in a little while.

Not sure about the ram speed and timings not making a dif. I noticed better performance from going from 1600/9 to 2400/11. There are cpu bound scenarios where it does on ddr3.
LINK
Although, it will depend heavily on the gpu and resolution.
Edit: blah, copy/pasta fail

Depends on lots of factors really. Strong gpu with 1080p/144hz, it will. Lesser framerate? Doubtfull.

Thinking of going with the Strix-GTX1080-O8G since my STRIX 970's have been good to me, thoughts, comments, or suggestions?

CPU-bound =/= CPU-bottlenecked. That test shows what happens when your build is so unbalanced that the slightest alteration to the CPU or any of its co-dependents will have a proportional impact on frame rate. Even still, those results go against logical expectations, as well as every other test I've seen. With very few exceptions, if RAM affects gaming performance that much, there is a problem, and it's not necessarily a problem with hardware configuration.

Can you explain why you believe refresh rate has any bearing? Playing at 1440P instead of 1080P will put more emphasis on the GPU, whether the 1440P monitor has a 60hz refresh rate or 144. The factor at play is simple: If the CPU is working harder than your GPU, the CPU and perhaps its co-dependents determine frame rate. That's the opposite of what you want when actually playing a game.

There was a headline that popped up on my Google Now feed this morning that said "ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce GTX 1080 offers poor overclocking." Didn't read the article though, and it may apply to all of the 1080s. Could be artificial limits in the bios.

I'v gotten to the point that I OC when I get it just to see how far I can push it then back it off to stock and leave there.

Never said anything about bottlenecks. Anything that helps the cpu will in cpu bound scenarios. Of course you need a powerful gpu to make sure that the gpu isn't the bottleneck in the first place.

Well the assumption is that the higher refresh rate of your monitor, the higher you want your frame rate. A stronger gpu at lower resolution, your cpu will more of a difference, as seen in the videos we leaked.
All depends on the game of course. Open world games will generally be more dependant on cpus than linear ones that will depend on the gpu more. Pretty sure there are exceptions of course.

Sure, but we have to apply ideal hardware configurations to real-world use, where you want your GPU working at max capacity regardless of how much work a game requires from the CPU. We can adjust settings all day long to expose other bottlenecks, but they are not applicable to the sensible way of doing things. I would certainly hope no one buys a GTX 1080 to play at the potatoiest settings that produce the highest frame rate allowable by the lowest priority components.
EDIT: And to clarify, this isn't all to say you should put zero thought into RAM-buying and grab bargain-bin DDR3-1600 even for high-end builds.

Very true, it does depends on settings. But a person who has a 1080 and a 1080P 144hz monitor might want to lower settings to achieve 144fps. Depends on the user. I personally wouldn't lower settings after 60fps, even with my 144hz monitor.
Although I don't play competitive MP games.

I was able to OC my monitor to 100hz couldn't get it to work at 120, I run at 1440 and most of the time I run on the highest setting and because of tearing in so many games I have gotten in the habit of just leaving vsync on.

O yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying go all out and go for broke for ram on the flip side. Just passing along info, some people will because they must have the absolute best regardless of price.

I think I might finally have to delve into the new monitor market soon I like my IPS but I hate the base and it isn't adjustable besides I need to check out the new tech like free syn now that it's been out for a while.

If AMD actually prices the 480 at $199 with Fury X performance.... My God.
And the 480X at $229 with over Fury X performance... I'm buying 2 instantly.
frick me for not buying AMD stock at just over a dollar earlier this year.
Zen is apparently being demo'd tonight too.
The year of AMD has begun.

I am leaning toward the 1080 but if AMD comes out strong I am not tied to it, I am just ready to get something.

I think you might be overselling them. If the 199 price point is right, you're probably looking at 390/Xish performance. Hope I'm wrong tho.
Well, maybe a bit faster. I doubt fury x performance, however.
