So it's like

23-24" 1080p or 27" 1440p
IPS or TN
60 hz or 120 hz or 144 hz

For a $1000 - $1500 gaming machine.

I don't play FPS, so I'm leaning towards IPS. I have no idea about the rest.

I would agree with that. If you don't play fast pace games like that then a 60hz 1440p would be great IMO.

Just to clarify: I do play a lot of LoL. IPS shouldn't be a problem for LoL, right?

I play fast paced FPS on a 1440P 60Hz IPS panel just fine. The pass-through monitors have low input lag.

27" 1440P has higher pixel density than 23-24" 1080p. In order to have the same pixel density at 1080p, the screen would need to be around 20.5".

IPS/PLS is better than TN obviously. As I said in my previous post, get a pass-through monitor (one which only uses DVI-D) and input lag won't an issue for twitch shooters and the like.

Of course higher refresh rate is nice, but higher pixel density at 60Hz looks nicer. I don't consider 144Hz to be notably better than 120Hz. When you spend $1000-1500 on a computer, the accompanying monitor ought to reflect the hardware's capabilities. I'd say 120Hz 1080p is minimum, but I think it'd still be a waste.

Prices are generally as followed:

1080P 60Hz TN: $100-150
1080P 60Hz IPS: $120-180
1080P 120/144Hz TN: $200-300
1080P 120/144Hz TN w/gsync: $599
1440P 60Hz IPS/PLS: $300-400
1440P 120/144Hz TN w/gsync: $799

1440P 144Hz gsync panel is so expensive because it's literally the only 1440P panel that supports refresh rates greater than 60Hz out of the box, and the only 1440P panel with gsync.

Would you recommend OCing the monitor you listed to 120?

Worth a shot. From what I've read a lot of them will do 120Hz, and pretty much all will do 90. Just takes a lot of trial and error. Overclocked panels can do some weird things. Read as much about it as you can.

However, since you didn't go with the one on ebay, which one did you end up getting?

Not sure what you mean by minimum... are you saying 1080p 60 Hz won't get the most out of a $1-1.5k machine?

Also, when you say 120Hz 1080p is a waste, are you saying that because you think I'm better off going 1440p 60Hz than 1080p 120Hz?

Been narrowing it down some. Still need to do more research on specific mobo's, PSU, etc once I decide which direction I'm going. So right now it's looking like:

24" 1080p 60Hz IPS monitor
770 video card
i5-4690K CPU
Some Z97 mobo with SLI for future upgrades
2x4GB 1600MHz RAM
Either H440 or Define R4 case
Hyper 212 evo cooler
250GB SSD
1TB 7200 HDD
PSU

for ~$1200

-or-
Upgrade monitor to 27" 1440p 60Hz IPS
Upgrade video card to 970

for ~$1500

Do those sound reasonable/balanced?

Just ordered everything but he cooler and the monitor, I will order those tomorrow. I got it all for your listed price except the monitor was about $30 more from Amazon.

My recent experience with COD AW and Unity just hastened me building this, plus I am an impatient bastard when I want something.

Thanks for esentially picking everything for me. I have an extra code from the GPU's, I only want one of the games, if you want one of the following let me know and the extra is yours.

Far Cry 4
The Crew
AC: Unity

Do the cards come with three codes each, or do you get to pick one of three? If you have duplicates of all three of those games I'll gladly take them all, but otherwise Far Cry 4.

Either way I wouldn't get a 770. 970 is 50% more performance in a lot of games, and the 2GB vram in the 770 will bottleneck performance even at 1080p, judging from the way things are going lately with Shadow of Mordor, Watch Dogs, AC unity, etc. 3GB is becoming bare minimum.
