go to some areas of new orleans and you'll see..
dirty diapers in parking lots of grocery stores, among other things, leftover family boxes of fried chicken remnants etc.. all 15 feet from a nearly empty trash can.

I flipped a cigarette butt on the street in Tokyo and a stranger walked up and made me pick it up. I looked around and noticed there was no litter to be seen anywhere. Just a different mentality of the general poulation.

Actually, it is almost $2,000 US. The conversion rate is 0.98 Canadian to 1 US. However, I doubt there is much need to threaten a fine. BCers seem to have a deeper appreciation for their natural environment and they walk everywhere (some of the fittest people I have seen... hardly ever see an obese person
so they do not want to walk by litter whereas we can just drive on by. It is all about culture and thinking about others.

Or go on a trail in Kisatchie. shite is everywhere. Beer cans, boxes, bottles and crap left over from the meth labs. Hell, how long does it take to clean up after the St. Patrick Day parade? shite is everywhere for weeks. There are too many boat ramps that are like landfills. Its pure laziness and lack of pride.

I can understand the urban areas. What used to really piss me off was going to my favorite fishing spots and seeing trash on the bank, beef cans floating in the lake, etc.

I'm not even gonna lie.
How many of y'all old schoolers used to throw the 16 oz coke bottles at the signs on teh side of the road when passing by?
i used to be a master at clocking one at any speed. then they switched to plastic.
the good ole days

I'm ok with people building reefs where I fish with beer bottles.

This is something that has pissed me off for long time. I see people every day flicking their cigg butts out the window. I saw a low life just dump his trash out the window in a school zone. The number one reason is education and parenting.

Was amazed at the Sorrel landing last Sunday....trash everywhere
I would have NO problem with enforcement and fining the frick out of people who litter. It's just ridiculous.
Hell, someone tossed a mattress on Fla Blvd, just across the bridge from DS, last week.

Its definately something that is taught to be OK. Everything falls back to parenting and mentoring! Pisses me off almost as much as a thief!

Hell, I've watched people throw shite in my yard as they drove by. It's not careless, it's deliberate.

would be an interesting experiment for a mobile app to do one of two things:
compile places that are bad off so they can be targeting by those that would clean
or take pictures of violators and public shaming.
On Choctaw i think in br, there is a popeyes with a field next to it after a parking lot. The grass was high and completely covered with popeyes paper and boxes

It wasn't an excuse. It was an explanation. You have many urban people who feel it's their right to trash the place.

Roger,
I think your giving people that litter a little too much credit in stating that they think it's their right. That would require them too think about it. It's learned from watching their degenerate family and friends! Let someone else worry about it!

I've heard it many, many times. Hell, go read the campus trashing threads on the rant. It's their right because they pay taxes for someone to clean up the mess.

Dang!
Things have apparently changed in 15 years.

It ain't worth much thought. It's laziness. Pure, and simple.

When I first moved to LA in 1987, I couldn't believe the litter I saw everywhere. I couldn't grasp how people could just leave trash everywhere.
And it's not a demographic thing... I saw it at LSU after football games, wherein even the wealthy tailgaters left their shite everywhere for someone else to clean up.
Instead of "Give a Hoot, Don't pollute" it is "Don't give a shite, let it sit".
Up here it's not near as bad despite this being a relatively poor area of the US (but not nearly as diverse as LA).
I guess some people just respect the environment more than others.
Conservation is conservative, an idea that seems lost on many otherwise conservative folks in LA IMO.
Maybe it's because the social trust levels in LA are so low?
More research into social or societal trust levels in relation to the diversity of a population might be in order to gain a better understanding?
Here's a good start for those so inclined:
