re: Do not want Marcus Smart

His FG and 3P are lacking, but he's right in line with the rest of the numbers. A few are even better. His FT is best out of the group. That tells me he has the fundamentals to be a great shooter and maybe he just forced too many bad shots this year. He's a freshman. I'd bet his numbers improve significantly if he stayed throughout his 4 years. Put him on a team full of shooters and watch his role and his game change.
shite, even a guy like Westbrook shot 40% his first few years in the league. The guy really still can't "shoot".

So does Smart have the athleticism and quickness to go with his size? Xavier Henry is a pretty big guy as well but he can't do anything with his size because he can't shoot and isn't quick. Not saying Smart will be nearly as bad as Henry and I've never seen him play, but I'm just curious.

He's pretty athletic. Very good defender and very good at driving into the lane

He has adequate quickness and athleticism.
I don't want to take a Pg with the first pick, so I really don't even want the dude. But to base his performance off %s as a freshman is lol.

Plenty of all-time great pgs have had 'adequate quickness and athleticism'

Smart is impressive physically at the college level...not so much for the NBA, imo.
what I meant is he isn't going to be able to muscle his man in the lane for points nearly as consistently as he can in college.

Smart is a good defender, but ya, for defense, I'd rather Oladipo.
I didn't compare Oladipo to Mason, but why would a solid starter on the wing that can defend be a bad thing?

Comments like this make me shake my head.
He's 19 years old! If you want to be technical...he's a 'young' 19 year old (turned 19 2 weeks ago).
You telling me his body won't develop more in the next 5 years?

Right. 4 APG. The same amount guys like Westbrook, Irving, Rondo, Rose, Holliday averaged in college. I didn't think I would have to explain to you that it's a different game in college compared to the NBA.
fair enough...that stat isn't very important, and i was trying to use it to help my argument.

Great. a 43% shooter destroys a 40% shooter.
yes...I don't wan't a sub 40% score-first PG leading this team.
Porter and Oladipo are good defenders that will be better in other categories, imo.

It has nothing to do with his body...It has to do with the bodies in the NBA.
Also, I didn't say he won't develop at all, just that his offensive game won't translate well to the NBA.

Who's the cat from Cal? Crabbe?
Haven't heard much from him at all this year.
Pac-12 POY.
Kinda skinny, but he can shoot, get to the goal, finish with both hands well and defends.

Pretty much this. Although, I don't think he will be a great shooter.
I am not worried about the FG% of a just turned 19-year-old guard.
He has good form at the line. That tells you all you need to know. And scouts look at free throw percentage to see if a player can improve on his shooting percentages.
Plus he actually gets to the fricking free throw line. Something no one on the Hornets/Pelicans do.

I mean, I wouldn't be totally disappointed if we got Smart. I just wouldn't want to take him over Muhammad or Porter.
Smart kind of falls into Noel category with me. I don't necessarily want him but if he is BPA I'll take him.
I like Oladipo but with Gordon he's redundant. I'll take Smart over him; greater position of need. Oladipo is great but he's not going to matchup w LBJ, Melo, Durant, Gay, etc. There are some SFs that will eat his lunch.

That's true...it would be great if he could be a full time SF, but even if he can't, he could give us flexibility with the Gordon situation.
I don't know what the team's plans are with that. If they're sticking with Gordon and Victor is only a SG, that pick doesn't make sense.
In that case, give me Shabazz or Porter. I'll take Noel over Smart too.

So you want to pick a position? If they think Victor is the best player when our name is called, I think he's going to get picked, regardless of his position.
Also, speaking towards matching up with LBJ, Melo, Durant, and Gay. Are Shabazz and Porter really going to fair that much better. The only possible matchup in there where maybe the defender isn't torched is Porter on Gay.

Same situation with McLemore

Well no one matches up with those guys, technically. That's why they are the best.
Shabazz and Porter are just bigger bodies though. Most SFs are 6'6" at the low end and 6'8"/6'9" on the big end. Guys like Melo and LBJ would abuse Oladipo in the post. Durant would shoot over him with relative ease.
Now if we are talking Oladipo at SG, then that's a different story.

Drake, your boy Shabazz shaved a year off his age. He's actually 20. LINK
