OP was on the fence between buying and building... i never, ever recommend a novice to do any manipulation at all to the CPU or GPU. they simply dont know what they are doing.
I can't argue with that.

did OP ever say what his video card was?
Sorry guys, lunchtime.
My card is a nvidia one, 1gb, about a year and a half old. GT something, I dont remember off the top of my head. Its a solid card, but still PCIx 2.0. I want to upgrade.
As for overclocking, thats not for me. While I am confident that I have the necessary knowledge to build the system, screwing with hardware component performance is a little above my paygrade at this point.

GT or GTX? model # makes a big difference too.
generally speaking, if you have a decent Nvidia card you are safe to go with an AMD cpu - especially on a budget build.
AMD/AMD builds can be less than favorable unless both components are TotL.

Def a GT. I don't remember the exact #, have to check tonight when I get home.
As far as AMD and Intel, is it a preference thing? I've only had experience with Intel.
Guessing by sight I think its this one.

no, its not really a preference issue nowadays so much as its a price/performance issue.
the X3XX series of AMDs (Vishera) processors provide a really good performance for their price. However, they arent and will never be equal to the TotL intel models. they won't cost as much either though.
AMD video cards rely on the processor to do some of the calculations, so pairing a mid range AMD card with a mid range AMD CPU isnt a good idea.

For the age of my board, my options were limited. As a matter of fact, I bought(tried)two new soundcards last year when my original one went out, and neither worked with my board.
I still have an AGP slot on my motherboard.

take baraccuda's build and add THISto it and youll be just under $1000.
note that is an AMD/AMD build, but both the CPU and GPU are high enough quality as to not see a dip in performance.
eta: that puts you a shade under $950. we could up it to bump right against $1000 if you wanted

It's always exciting for this board when someone wants to do a build.

Geek boners

The term is nerd boner. I just wish someone would do a build that isn't $1000 budget for once, including myself...

You are saying 1k budgets are too high or low?
With water cooling and hardware.. I'm not sure what my main rig costs.. I just know it is well north of 1k.

It's too common, it's loosing it's excitement. I think it's a great price point which is why it was my budget. We just don't see other budgets on here often.
Posted on 3/20/13 at 3:54 pm to Mr Gardoki
I wish I had more money to put into it.
Posted on 3/20/13 at 3:56 pm to Mr Gardoki
I understand.. But you won't see many big budget builds.
Simply most ppl here are gamers and not PC enthusiasts.

I get it. the people putting more than that into it aren't posting on this board saying they need a build. They are posting in a titan thread that has gone on for a long time.

the smaller the budget, the more challenging and more fun to spec parts.
other than $2500 + build

I keep hoping a friend will tell me he wants to build a $500 pc or something. That's doubtful since all my friends are casual console gamers at best.

You could just buy this

Same here.. Wish I had friends into PCs. None of my IRL friends even play consoles, none of them play video games at all.
