But Mingo and Ansah are very inexperienced as stand up players, much like Tez and Junior. I am not sure why we would pick a player in the first round that is on the same level as our projected starters at the position
Take a look at the top DE/ OLBs in the draft. The only 1 that has played in a 3-4 system is Jarvis Jones. Everyone else has played as a DE.
Just because they are inexperienced playing in a 3-4 OLB system is irrelevant to me. You want to pass up on a potential stud just because he hasnt played standing up? You do realize its pretty much the same instincts as a DE. Your playing on the edge. Keep containment. Get after a QB. An edge player is an edge player.
It's not like they are playing in between the tackles and have to move in and out of blocks. Only thing that would have to do that is new to them would be coverage. And Mingo played safety at west Monroe. Look at his combine drills. Best out of all those players at back pedaling, hip movement, and foot work. He looked extremely fluid at those drills. Everyone freaks out about his weight. He is a little light, I agree. But Jordan is 5lbs heavier than him and no one says anything about that. 10lbs is not a lot for him to add.

Yea I know what you are saying, right now we don't have a lot of "starter" needs. I would say OT, #2WR, and possibly DE depending on what we do with Hicks (NT or DE). We could look at S, but without knowing what our future plans are for Harper and Jenkins, it is hard to know how much of a need S is/will be.
I am not against taking a OLBer in the first round, but I question how much of a need it really is with Tez and Junior as our projected starters and how beneficial it would be to take a raw/inexperienced project in the first. We will see. I like Jordan and Jones at 15, but doubt either will be there.

Mingo is built for 3-4 OLB. I would be ECSTATIC if the Saints were able to get him. Yes a few more lbs would be nice but I truly think he has the potential to be a star. I am an LSU fan, yes...but you don't see me saying the same for other players.

He's a player that needs to be coached up, bulked up and put in the right system. Rob Ryan: DeMarcWare, Kamerion Wimbley, Derrick Burgeous
This is one of the only reasons I'd be ok with taking him. Ryan has a proven ability to develop pass-rushing OLBs.
From NFL.com Draft Profile:
Weaknesses: Very lean player, likely too thin in the hips to grow into an every-down defensive end. Needs to shed more consistently to prevent plays from getting outside of him. Long legs get in his way at times when trying to change directions quickly. Often gets too focused on scrapping with his blocker instead of getting his eyes in the backfield to find the ball. Did not progress in terms of pass rush moves during his career. Great player off the snap of the ball, but too often allows the offensive tackle to recover because he lacks a move to disengage.
They pretty much nailed every concern I had. Guys like Aldon Smith and Demarcus Ware might have weighed similar to Mingo coming out of college, but it was different weight. Mingo still has the lower body of a track athlete, and I worry if he'll be able to hold-up at the point of attack. I know I know, he's a 3-4 OLB, but that still means he will be taking on TEs, FB, and OTs at times.
More than anything, however, is his inability to develop any significant pass rush moves. Again, this can be taught to an extent, but some of it is just natural. Pass rushing is very much like boxing. You can certainly improve, but some of it is just natural, how you see hands, how you feel body position/lean and how you use yours.
Again, I hope and pray I'm wrong if we draft him, but I don't see it.

The way you rotate guys in the front 7 of a 3-4... you are pretty much 3 starters in on a 3-4 system. I'm not confident at all with Tez being a full time starter, i believe in Galette's abilities and hope it transitions to a starter well.

Not really. They are asked to drop into coverage often as well as set the edge and rush the QB. Many college DEs do not have the hips to play standing up as an OLBer...unless they are a pass rusher only.

He's a top 10 talent. If he falls to us, take him and be happy. We would be lucky if Mingo falls to us. After the combine I have seen him in the top 10. Guess everyone whose job it is to scout players are wrong. O and so are all GMs and coaches that like him. They don't know anything.

HaHa please, re-read my post, past the 1st few sentences.

I trust Rob Ryan in judging defensive talent. He knows what he's doing.

Lol, this argument again.
I disagree with the scouts. Big fricking deal. They're right plenty of times, but they're wrong as well. It's a message board, people debate things, that's what it's for.
I made my own opinion about him. I'm not saying it's worth half a penny, but it's what I think about him.

I did. You failed to mention how often OLBers drop into coverage.

I will self ban until preseason if we take Mingo in order to avoid saying something un 2x henderson award winner like

Not sure how you missed this.
Because that was in there too.

Yep I must have read right over that part...twice. Time to get my eyes checked.

Demarcus Ware
6'4"
251 lbs
34 game starter
195 tackles
55.5 tackles for loss
27 sacks
10 forced fumbles
4.56 in the 40-yard dash
38.5-inch vertical jump
127 inch broad jump
7.08 second 3 cone drill
Barkevious Mingo
6'4"
241 lbs
15 game starter
119 tackles
29.0 tackles for loss
15 sacks
4 forced fumbles
4.58 second 40-yard dash
37.0 inch vertical jump
128.0 inch broad jump
6.84 second 3 cone drill
Not that big of a difference if you look at what Mingo's stats could have been if he would have stayed an another year.
And the level of competition. DeMarcus Ware played LSU once as a Senior. I had to go look it up. He had 2 tackles and 0 sacks.

Dwight Freeny is a one trick "spinning" pony. DeMarcus Ware is a speed rusher. Starting out, Julius Peppers had two moves. TWO! The thing they all have though is SPEED, same as Mingo. That can't be taught.
