A serial with a good long term outlook should go about 100 episodes. IIRC, that was the plan for LOST until the studios made them add some episodes to one of the seasons.
I'm seriously not really complaining about Fringe or Alias here.. but both of those shows could have told the same story in 52 episodes.. I would even say they could have told the same story in 26, but I might be pushing it. Anime can tell a much more complex story in 26, 30 minute episodes.. why does it take 100, 1 hour episodes to tell a weaker story in American TV!?!

Not every show should take 100 eps. But some should be limited to that.
The focus should be on telling the story with the least amount of filler possible. Some shows could be done well and only last 20 episodes. Some shows have more story to tell.
The way shows are ordered needs to change. Don't give a show an 8 episode order to start the year and then tack on another 10 epsidoes when you find out people like it. You almost assure yourself of unever writing and weird storyline breaks. 12-16 episodes of a serial per season can be plenty to tell a tight, entertaining, engrossing story.
