Like I said, I'm with you. Bring in Tavon.
We don't need a big, tall, fast WR like Patterson on the outside. Morgan is perfectly capable to provide that deep outside threat despite his 5 starts.
Even when Morgan's hammy goes out or his shoulder gets separated, and there's no deep threat behind him, it won't get crowded in the middle because Tavon will already be in the endzone doing a dance. We won't even have to put someone on the line on the outside. We could have a cardboard cut-out of Morgan there. Yeah, that outside position doesn't need any addressing at all. The slot is a priority because Lance Moore only makes first downs not touchdowns like Tavon would.
Go Tavon!
Gotta love posts like this.
You make it sound lke Patterson is Randy Moss and Austin is Wayne Chrebet. It's not like Patterson is some 6'5 giant. He's also not even as fast as Austin nor is he the kind of WR who high-points the ball in traffic and really uses his height to his advantage. He's a breadbasket catcher who negates most of his 6'2 height by letting balls get into his body instead of catching with his hands.
Again, Moore can man the outside position just fine. It's hysterical how often yal bring-up Moore being in the slot when he wasn't even lined up in the slot as much as Colston was.
Also, the NFL has evolved. Designated positions like TEs, slot WRs, possession WRs, etc have gone out the window. We now flex TEs like Graham out over CBs and bring 6'6 WRs like Colston in the slot to get them on safeties. It's about mismatches. Quit making it sound like Patterson is our only option on the outside when Austin could play it just as well.
Lastly, gimme the guy who dominated everyone he played for the last 3 years as opposed to a guy who had one big year of torching average teams and never really throttling the big boys.

Don't go there Cajun. It's just best you fall in line. Here's what I've learned:
-Morgan made a dynamic play that made it on Sportscenter. That's all we need on the outside. Not a priority position to address despite no deep threat behind him.
-Lance Moore is garbage. He only moves chains, knows what Brees is thinking, and only has reliable hands. But he can't score in one play.
-Sproles is an explosive playmaker, but we should let some of his touches to go to another explosive playmaker so they can score the same amount of points on a TD. That's a prioirty!

Nostra, maybe I came across the wrong way, I dont think Austin would be a bad pickup for the saints and the offense.. he has a chance to be productive, I just wouldn't draft him because of our other pressing needs
Again, I am not out here saying we have to draft Austin. I'm simply stating the defense only crowd is being overly myopic in dismissing a guy who could be an insane weapon for a unit that IMO needs upgrading.
quote:
You say our WRs need to be upgraded.. why? Because they don't pass the eyeball test? A wr corp doesn't have to have a picture perfect measurable chart to be productive.
I believe our WR unit needs to be improved for numerous reasons. First, from a pure depth standpoint we are prison-raped if either Colston or Moore goes down for an extended period of time. Second, we have lost some serious speed lately with RM and DH. It's my opinion that the inability to stretch the field lately was part of the reason for Brees' increase in INTs this past season. Some of the windows he was throwing into were insanely tight.
We need someone who can blow the top off defenses and create some void spaces for Brees. Also, like Chad mentioned, the lack of YAC or big plays in general this past season was alarming.
Lastly, every significant contributor in our WR unit is getting old. I'm not saying they can't still be productive, but they won't forever. You don't just draft for next season you draft for the future. A new WR could help us both next year and in the future.

The word you're looking for is sarcasm.

What we've learned from you:
Cordarrelle Patterson and his 3.4 RPG, 41.8 YPG, and 1 TOTAL TD in 5 games against top 25 opponents (Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Vanderbilt) is the second coming of Randy Moss. And if Luck and RG3 were in this draft there'd be a three-way battle for the top spot with the dominant freak that is Cordarrelle Patterson.
It's easy being facetious.

Sure, let's put a 5-9 Tavon on the outside. It's all about mismatches. Or that one game when we play Michael Adams in ARIZ.

When playing against good competition, he didn't have that much of an impact
You can't really fault Patterson here. He played with a QB who always played his worst on the biggest stages & at the worse possible moments. His head coach seemed to to coach his worst in those same situations. That Tennessee program overall, the last few years, has been a clusterfluck.
On the other hand Austin played with a much better QB, in an offensive system that put his talents on display & for a program overall that is in better shape then Tennessee's is.
Both Austin & Patterson, I believe, will be stars on the next level. I would be more in favor of taking Patterson over Austin since Patterson possesses abilities that no one on the offense currently possesses.

What was Austin's stats against LSU? Serious question, I can't remember

Much of that was Geno Smith and garbage time I believe.
The kid is good though.

You probably loved playing Steve Smith in his prime.
