The only thing I would say about YAC and tavon austin is that it's not a given that he'll be successful in the NFL.. I'm not trying to pass this along as a fact, just a thought, but what does he weigh? 180?
nobody is a given, no point taken here.

Care to visit my YAC argument above?
If you truly think Lance Moore needs more upgrading than does a WR with 5 career starts, all due to injuries, then there's nothing to discuss.
Whatever marginal gains you can project by replacing Moore's touches via Tavon, you still are losing a great target in Moore. Whereas, bring in a 6-2.5, 219 WR like Patterson with 4.42 speed to compete an still-unknown commodity like Morgan, and it's a win-win.
It's just common sense which makes this whole idea of this thread dumb.

Patterson definitely has the skillset to be a #1 WR, but I don't know how good he really is. When playing against good competition, he didn't have that much of an impact:
Florida: 8/75/1
Georgia: 2/31/0
Miss St: 2/25/1
Bama: 1/25/0
SC: 3/26/0
Mizz: 3/53/0
He made an impact running the ball, but that's not going to happen often with your flanker. Almost a third of his receiving yards last year came against Troy. Austin seems like a clear cut better player to me. He obviously didn't face the same competition Patterson did, but he still demolished the best teams he faced, including some with talent on defense (OU, UT). He really only had one sort of bad game against KSt (6/34/1).

Lance Moore is one of the worst in the business in production post catch. If you think that is not an area of our offense that could justifiably use an explosive play maker such as Tavon then you need to off yourself before you procreate.

I dont see the value in any single WR when you have a guy like Drew Brees who slings it to 8+ different targets every game.
A WR doesn't have to have the ball in his hands to make an impact. We're hoping Morgan can build on his solid season, but Colston/Moore/Toon aren't going to create separation down field, which will allow the safeties to play closer to the line of scrimmage/focus on Graham. Our offense was very good last year, but it wasn't as efficient as it was in 09/11 when Devery and Meachem could stretch the defense and open things up for everyone else.

Question for you, where would you rate our receiving unit?
even though it lacks big names and 'star power' I'm going to have to go with the numbers and say number 1 or at least top 3
am I allowed to include jimmy graham too?

And Joe Morgan (who, btw, Devery Henderson started over when he was healthy) is not bigger area of need to upgrade?
I know you say some outlandish things on ST for reaction, but I know you are not stupid? Are you?

Morgan is a star coming into his own and provides the vertical threat we are looking for.
Tavon is a playmaker, makes plays with the ball, stretches defense vertical and horizontal, is a nightmare to match up with in the slot, speed, quickness, swag... you have no argument. Lance Moore is not just a slot guy and i'm not even advocating getting rid of him. Tavon provides a dimension to this offense that no receiver does. Sproles provides some of that type of threat and look how successful he is with his. Imagine what Tavon can do.
Tavon's past three years production: 273 catches for 3262 yards 28 td's 103 rushes for 984 yards 5 td's. 5 td's in return game. Dude is a freak, a fricking beast.

This. If Morgan is able to be the vertical guy, then we'll be fine, but if not then stuff is going to get very crowded.
This same thing happens with the Patriots. They have a very effecient, precise passing game because of the underneath guys like Gronk, Hernandez and Welker. They have struggled at times, however, with the inability to stretch defenses deep.

Why are you speechless? The group had the most YPG in the NFL last year..
seems pretty productive to me

Again, I don't know why so many of yal don't grasp this. Moore makes the majority of his catches on the outside. He is far from a true slot WR. He's exceptional at sitting in zones and in precise route running, but he's not someone you're gonna put in the slot and have run away from a nickelback on a drag or a crossing route.

Fine, Chad. Whatever. I have no argument.
Let's take the ball out of one of Drew's most reliable chain movers on third down, and while we're at it, take some touches away from the most explosive playmakers the Saints have ever had in Sproles.
That makes sooooo much sense. I'm with you on the Tavon bandwagon. Let's draft a player who will bring us what we already have: a chain-mover & a TD play-maker.
Go Tavon!

3rd downs? We wouldn't need 3rd downs bro. We wouldn't "need" Tavon but he'd be a beast and help this offense more than what you're giving recognition. BTW, you can still have lance moore on the outside doing his 2.5 yard curls.

Can you not isolate individuals from a system or from stats? Can you not factor in aspects like a QB's ability or a team's reliance on the pass?
If you honestly think we have the best WR unit in the league I'd love to see your WR rankings. Where would you have Colston and Moore?
Posted on 3/19/13 at 11:50 am to FootballNostradamus
Nostra, maybe I came across the wrong way, I dont think Austin would be a bad pickup for the saints and the offense.. he has a chance to be productive, I just wouldn't draft him because of our other pressing needs
you say our WRs need to be upgraded.. why? Because they don't pass the eyeball test? A wr corp doesn't have to have a picture perfect measurable chart to be productive
the stats prove this

Like I said, I'm with you. Bring in Tavon.
We don't need a big, tall, fast WR like Patterson on the outside. Morgan is perfectly capable to provide that deep outside threat despite his 5 starts.
Even when Morgan's hammy goes out or his shoulder gets separated, and there's no deep threat behind him, it won't get crowded in the middle because Tavon will already be in the endzone doing a dance. We won't even have to put someone on the line on the outside. We could have a cardboard cut-out of Morgan there. Yeah, that outside position doesn't need any addressing at all. The slot is a priority because Lance Moore only makes first downs not touchdowns like Tavon would.

Are people actually inferring Joe Morgan is consistent and dependable?
Th Saints need to give Drew a true #2. If a true impact defensive player is there, great. If not, and Patterson is there...go with him. This offense would be better if they had a consistent 1-4 option (graham included)
