The key to the Saints winning is Offense and QB play, not D. I agree we need to upgrade the D but if we can't block for Brees, it's over.

I would say the key to winning is being able to run the ball to open up Drew and the offense. On defense it would be to stop the run and make a team one dimensional. The offense will be in the top 10. this defense needs to get to the middle of the pack. What we have is not going to do that. I know the 34 will help out alot but, adding playmakers in the LB's and secondary will be key to this transition.

Missip,I agree but feel we need to prioritize. We have quite a few holes but keeping momentum on offense and Drew Brees healthy keep the wheels rolling. The chance of our D being middle of the pack next year, let's just say I am not overly optimistic even if we draft all defense and spend the little money we have for free agency on it..

I would argue that you can find defensive players that can contribute on defense in the 3rd. Akiem Hicks comes to mind

1 defensive player that we drafted in the mid rounds that has actually been decent. Every other player sucks. Even our early picks too. Look at the OL we have drafted in late rounds that turn into a player. Payton is a great at judging OL talent.

And I agree we should get a vet at a reasonable price there. Our OL is still going to be ok without Bushrod, and our offense will still be at the top of the nfl. Our D will be horrible if we don't get an elite player in the draft. We did have the worst defense in the history of the NFL last year. And if our defense can get just to the middle of the pack in the NFL, its going to be a great year. We don't need a top 10 D because of our offense. But, if we're in the bottom of the NFL in defense again, don't know if we will make the playoffs. We don't need an elite D, we just need a better D that gets turnovers and gets Brees the ball. I'd love to get an Elam type player. A defensive guy that gets the ball to our offense. That's key.

And I agree that the key to the saints is the offense, but we won the Super Bowl because our defense forced 39 turnovers. 2nd best in the league.

PERFECTLY stated.

The NFL catches up quickly...having a great offense in the past does not guarantee future success. Brees gets rid of the ball quickly, but if he has slightly less time, it makes it more difficult for our average receivers to get a ton of separation and makes it more difficult for him to get the ball in there. Then you get more 3rd and longs, more picks, more of our below average Defense on the field.

Lane could be gone, and Fluker is too much of a wild card on the left side. He's best used on the right side.

I don't like the idea of a rookie LT protecting Brees. Get a vet and draft defense first round.

OL has been the safest pick by position historically. Drafting a defensive player doesn't guarantee impact this season. See (Robinson, Jordan, Jenkins and Ellis)

Linebacker is probably your best bet for impact this season on the Saints defense. Plenty of talent in the 2nd-3rd rounds.

I completely agree with that, but in recent years where have we taken an OL in the 1st? Last 1 I can remember was Jammal Brown. We took Nix, Bushrod, and Evans all in the 4th or later. We draft great late in the draft for OL.

Not saying we draft great defensively in the early rounds or anything, but if there ever was a year to go D in the 1st it's this years considering we had the worst D in the history of the NFL and we have a relatively early pick compared to where we usually pick.

If we don't have anyone in the locker room to start at T, sign a vet at a reasonable price, draft D and pick up another project OL that Payton finds and likes in the mid to later rounds.

Also think that with us getting Rob Ryan, he is going to want to draft a D guy in the 1st. Dallas was like 31st D before he got there, then they sign Carr and draft Claiborne for him. I can see us picking the guy he wants to get in the 1st and us telling him that so he would come here. Not saying that's the only reason he's here, but I wouldn't want to be the DC of the saints if we have the same players as last year and didn't address the needs.
