Friedel is long gone, Marcus hasn't played regularly since Reading were relegated from the epl several years ago.
He played for Wolves not terribly long ago. I can always fap to bringing Wolverhampton players on to the USMNT.
Actually, probably not, since they all are fricking horrendous.

Guzan has had an incredible season.
I was wondering how good he's been in general as I haven't seen most of Villa's matches but he's been simply superb in every match I have seen. So much so as to say as good as any keeper in the EPL just from my limited viewing perspective.
Him replacing Howard would be the least of my worries.

I'm more worried about our shoddy back line and our lack of offensive production from the midfield.

I would feel as confident with Guzan as Howard.

Brad Guzan has had to deal with 148 shots on goal. 49 goals. 67.3%
Tim Howard has had to deal with 102 shots on goal. 34 goals. 67.3%
Just thought it was interesting.

what would the good ole US of A be without stats?
Posted on 3/8/13 at 11:50 pm to Dandy Lion
The USA is the only country that uses stats?
I think it's more impressive from Guzan, simply from the sheer number of shots he's had to face. Also, so many of his saves are finger tip/diving etc. Everton's D is better so I would imagine the shots Howard is facing, are, on average, further from the goal, weaker, etc.

Most stats are meaningless in soccer. Soccer is akin to horse racing. You must watch, observe, and take copious notes.

Not really. There are tons of very effective metrics used. Passing %, passing amount, chances created, second assists, conversion %, shots on target %, save %, tackle win %, minute per loss of possession, minute per error, etc.
I love stats, but I hate when people use them to argue between which player is better than the other. Sometimes it can be effectively used, while others I'd just like to trust my eyes.

I tend to agree that stats are a very small part of the picture of a player

Which sites for stats do you prefer?
I like them too and agree that a lot of the ones you mention are interesting. My one complaint with a lot of stats is simply that they could be so much more sophisticated.
Stats like 2nd assists, chances created, successful through balls accentuate the effect of the type players I've always loved to watch. Actual finishes are seldom as impressive as those slightly-grazed back heals that start the dominoes' fall.
With others like chance conversion percentage, for example, I tend to think they often tell us more about the type chances a certain striker is getting than his quality. I suppose it's good remedy for the misconception that the strikers for your team always miss more chances than others.

everything can be broken down into objective evidence. it's just finding the right evidence that translates to success

I use EPLindex. It's extremely comprehensive for the Prem.
They have additional stats to accompany those. Clear-cut chance conversion % being one of them.
I also like graphics. Heat maps are very interesting. As are shot placement graphics. Really shows the tendencies of a player and how good their shooting ability is.

That tweet makes me happy, because it shows that Friedel still remembers that he is American.
