Serendipity was just okay, nothing special IMO (w/pics)

Went out there last night. Standard $100 dinner date.
($85 for food +$17 tip)
I like the location near the park in the American can factory.
The Maitre'D does great you with a handshake. I was put off at first by the waiter who came in smelling like he had smoked a carton of cigarettes. But tis okay, doesn't affect his performance. The only other thing, it was 7pm so they sat us and five nearby tables at the same time four of which were our waiters, so we had to hear his scripted menu reading four times. But that's just being nitpicky. He did a good job and none of the above affects my review.
The decorations were interesting.
The place is casual, but you can wear whatever. I doubt they would turn you away. We probably should have got the tasting menu. For $60 you got a lot of food. We did get the snails from the tasting menu though. Weird to see them called Snails, but it is what they are.
She knew before looking at the menu that she wanted the Steak option.
The steak tasted good, but I never was a fan of pre-sliced steaks.
It had a chimichurri sauce, but had more of a pesto consistency.
The potato was just a potato, not really a good twice baked. The salad was good with it. The best thing about the dish was this one was filling.
But I have to be weird, so i got one of the two "off the wall items"
I was torn between the Empanada and the Baklava.
I didn't really like the Baklava. The mirlitons looked like apple slices, but were just so bitter.
The flavor was pretty good, but there was something a little off about it. I wouldn't recommend this dish.
Then the portion was really small. So it wasn't really filling. So I had to add on dessert as well.
The dessert was the highlight of the dinner. A strawberry shortcake. With mint on a sweet potato biscuit.
We each tried a 'punch' drink rather than our normal High-balls or cocktails.
It was okay, really not bad. But for a $100 dinner this city has better choices. Now off to lunch/dinner at Cochon in a few. Will be my first time there (only had Butcher).
I wouldn't steer people away from this place. But I enjoyed Toups, Rue 127 and Ralph's more in that area and price range.

Thanks Napoleon! I have been meaning to go as I have a living social deal for lunch there! I'm a little off the wall with food too so I'd likely go with what you did, but I will steer away from the baklava when choosing

Don't feel bad, I spent $130 (108+tip) on boiled crawfish last night. Told my wife, we could have gone to Latils for what we paid tonight.
...she really wanted crawfish though.

Maybe I'm just jaded. We had four for lunch at Couchon today and had a bad experience too.
Strange.
Our sever never checked on us after service, my girlfriends green beans were cold, not even warm, cold. Not cooked all the way either.
The fish was good, I liked my Couchon plate, and the Catcharterie (sp?) plate was good, IMO. Though speaking of which I think I enjoy the restaurant Boucherie more than Couchon. My Dad brought us out, so it was a free lunch. I just hate when I'm at a table with no refill. And he kept saying "You know we could have ate at Commander's" (his favorite restaurant)

That steak entree did look pretty lame, but my gf and I got the pork smoked in banana leaf and the empanada and loved both

THE exact dishes we both wish we had ordered.
Really it wasn't bad, it just wasn't a top place I'm going to rave about.
I would eat there again if someone asked me to go with them. But this city has 1,200+ places to eat, and I want to try as many as possible.
I was talking to my dad about it today. He feels its better to have a few places you know and love, rather than try two+ new places a week.

I find this a very good problem to have

Blah. I'm all about having a handful of tried and trues for special occasions, but on a random Friday night, I'm swinging for the fences
