is he eligible today, or does he still have work to do? Is there anything within his academic record that will require the Clearinghouse to do more than simply checking the "Approved" box?

All of recruiting is based on assumptions.

use your imagination, I'm not talking "literally" eligible today.

Still, if Choupique is right on the facts, LSU has handled this in a Sabaneque way; that is POORLY from an ethical standpoint, but effectively for the school.
Wish we knew more, but it's difficult to clarify without naming names.

Key word being "if". We are hearing one side of a conversation the other side is prohibited from participating in. One thing that seems to not be in dispute is that Lawson has a scholarship offer to enroll next January. So, in my view, to say his scholarship was pulled is not entirely accurate.
Also, to say someone has passed all his classes doesn't mean the NCAA clearing house will accept those classes. I know of a player who had a class he took online and passed disallowed because it did not meet the clearing house's criteria for receiving credit.

I have not one time argued on here about Lawson's value as opposed to other recruits in this signing class.
Stop right there. So, you are not suggesting that Miles "pulled the scholarship" so that he could sign a player he wanted more? Is that not your contention?

Good point. Big problem with the whole cottage industry of recruiting coverage. The NCAA tries to prevent it but there's a thriving industry anyway that thrives around the NCAA rules. But I'll say this: More often than not, the school uses their inability to comment to ITS advantage, not the other way around.

I've been told many an athlete from Livingston has had the same course pass through the clearinghouse. There may be an issue with how the NCAA interprets the class per LSU's entry requirements though. For example, it could pass the clearinghouse for a kid to go to Bama, but the NCAA may think LSU allowing it would be too liberal an interpretation of its own admissions standard.
That's pure speculation on my part. I am confident that Livingston Parish school people who know a thing or two seem the think the class is just fine per the NCAA.

I am hoping he signs with LSU. I'm worried he may be getting some bad advice.
That's what happens when pride and hurt feelings get in the way.

Tevin Lawson to TCU. A good pickup after falling short with Duke Riley.

I don't buy into any of the Miles as a bad guy crap, no matter how much so- called inside info someone says they have. We all know Les Miles very well now; any anger I've ever felt toward him has nothing to do with him lacking integrity. There are many more Phelon Jones stories where he has done right by some kid than negative ones. He makes decisions in the best interest of his overall team. Kid can still achieve his dream; it's there for the taking.

Don't know if this is news or not, but I hear Lawson signed with TCU.
We get to see him in a purple for the season opener...

I'm saying the "grade issue" is a cop out. Miles dumped Lawson to sign somebody else. He just gets to keep his good guy image by saying it's a grade issue. All of this just one year after taking jabs at Gunner Keil for not sticking to his word.
College recruiting is dirty business, so be it. Posters here just need to know that the kid worked hard to get his grades in line. So if you're blaming the kid here, you're wrong.

Good Luck to him. I wish him the best. I do wish he could have been a Tiger. Hopefully this was the best decision for him to get a college education.

Some folks were saying it was his fault for losing the offer bc he didnt keep up his end of the agreement in the classroom
true or not, thats a different story...thats just what some were saying

I'd say 5-10 percent of the total posts on this threads are posts that are blaming the kid for not taking care of his grades, an accusation that seems shaky at best, considering the number of schools that aren't treating him like a grade risk.
Think about some other prospects LSU dropped because of academic issues. Interest in them declined. Once LSU changed the offer on this kid, schools came popping out of the woodwork -- TCU, Kentucky, Tennessee, Moo State, Texas, Oklahoma State, pretty much any major school in the region that didn't fill its DT need on signing day. His grades must be checking out pretty good.
Again, LSU's going to do what it has to and it is what it is and all that. But like Choupique said, LSU has lost the ability to complain the next time a Gunner Kiel flips.
Live by the sword and all that.

If TCU does not have a problem with his grades then I don't really buy the notion that LSU does.
I'm happy for Lawson. He'll get a stellar education at TCU and receive some solid defensive coaching in the process. I wish we would have kept him on board.

TCU does not have to follow SEC rules. If he doesn't qualify it's no skin off their back. We had the same issue with Griffin (Miami) and Huggins (Oklahoma). We wouldn't risk signing them so we told them grey shirt and you if qualify we have space. But it's a tough sell when another program comes along and says "sure we'll sign you. LSU (or A&M) just didn't want you. We do though."
SEC rules give you only 25 initial counters per year. If a kid doesn't qualify, he still counts towards that number. No other conference is working under those constraints so grade risks are going to sign with those other conferences or the SEC schools willing to take such chances. You have to weight the risk and reward. TCU's situation is all reward though so why not.
