For a good bunker, just dig a hole and crawl in. If you want comfort, a nice house or apartment usually works. Of course, in your home, you are not as safe from the federal anti-gun, Kenyan president police who fly around in their spy satellites.

You can bury them if you do it right. I would worry about corrosion of the metal more than anything. Galvanized pipe culverts do well underground. Not sure about carbon steel containers. May need to correct paint on it.
