I'm getting $1500 back federal and $150 back on state.
I made $40,000, no kids, I rent, filed zero.
Wtf. Is it just this shitty tax bracket or what?

Sounds to me like you are having too much withheld. The goal would be to get zero back and owe nothing.

How much are you really expecting to get back on that income?

No shite, with no itemized deductions, that sounds about right

Yuuup.
My tax return this year is huge. My first year on the job so I let it ride and have already corrected it for next year so I can get it around zero.
What's great is I got used to that "smaller" paycheck, and have effectively replaced the "added" money from changing my return by being newly eligible for 401K and started an HSA, so I am even with last year.

Why do you want a big tax return? All that means is you loaned the government your money at basically 0 interest.
So, I guess, congratulations on not giving the gov't as much of your hard earned money up front this year
Still room for improvement though.

I paid like $5000 something in taxes to federal, somewhere around that throughout the year and $2000 to state. Got $1500 back from federal and $150 from state. Sound about right?

Sucks to be you... My illegitimate children thank you for your contribution

No one is going to feel sorry for you when you are getting money back. Most on here still have to pay in more including me. It just sucks. I had to make an adjustment to pay an additional amount each week to try to break even next tax season. I hate the tax man.

No. It sounds like you should have paid about $3500 federal and $1500 to state.
