I think it's a good idea to target your filing date for around April 1. Not because it is April Fool's of course ...
As we all know, the IRS gets slammed in the couple of days before the deadline but delaying things to around 4/1 helps because it's quite possible one of the people who send a tax form on you (1099, W-4, etc.) will send one in January and then two weeks later say "Oops, disregard that one, let's try again".
For that reason I put everything I get into a pile until about 3/15 and only then take a preliminary hack at it, mostly so I have an idea of how big a check I may need to write. A week or so later make whatever adjustments are needed, and then file during the first week of April.
However, I do my own taxes. If you require the services of a CPA then you will want to get your info in to said CPA a good bit earlier.

The IRS is not processing individual income tax returns until January 30, 2013. LINK

Not to mention if you itemize, they won't process until mid February.

I did mine early to get out in front of what I am going to owe them. I knew it'd be substantial. I won't actually file until April 15th though. Why pay those suckers early? Forget that.

I was worried that my return would get caught is some red tape BS and not get processed.
That or the tax laws would change between now and then and I would have to file an ameded return thereby fricking up any chance I had on a quick return.

The biggest concern with filing this early is you get a corrected form in a month or an additional 1099 that you weren't expecting. Then you have to do it all over again.

That is when I will do mine. Make sure I get my refund before the end of the month.
