Is Lonesome Dove Tommy Lee Jones' and Duval's best performance?

I think Tommy for sure, but Duval? Maybe Appocolypse Now?

Augustus McRae is one of the best characters ever and the role was such a natural fit for Duvall. I can't imagine anybody else as Gus. In fact it makes it difficult for me to watch any of the prequels because it's just not the same without Duvall. He has had some other good roles as mentioned but this is my favorite.

As great as they both are, Lonesome Dove is still up there with some of their best performances.

Duval is such a great actor it's kind of hard to say this was hands down his "best performance". Watching him in some of his lesser known parts like The Apostle or Tender Mercies as well as his better known stuff like The Godfather, it's hard to single out any one thing.
Gus was probably my favorite role of his but I'm not sure that equates with it being his best. Plus, I think that he kind of fell into doing similar roles after that (pretty sure there was one with Costner and one with the guy from Wings at least). Which I would have preferred to see him explore some different types of roles.
Tommy Lee Jones just nailed Woodrow. I'm not sure anyone else could have pulled that off. (John Voight and James Garner, two good actors didn't come close). So for him, I'd have to say yes. That was his best stuff.

Duvall: as Uncle Hub in Secondhand Lions. If you've never seen this film, don't delay, watch it.
Jones: NCFOM.
Jones: NCFOM.

Aside from the ones already mentioned Tommy Lee Jones was awesome in Natural Born Killers. I think thats my favorite performance of his, he was perfect for that role. Robert Duval was great in The Godfather and Network though its hard to top how bad arse he was in Apocalypse Now and how great he was in The Apostle. I was lucky enough to get to meet him while he was working on the Apostle (I know, I know "cool story bro").

I'd say yes. Although Duval in the Apostle was spot on as well.
