Are businesses required to keep a certain amount of cash in the register?

I almost always pay cash but have noticed over the last few years that some small businesses cannot make change for large bills. With so many people paying with cards these days it's understanable, but are there any laws that require them to keep a certain amount of cash on hand to make change for customers paying cash?

Unless its a bank or something I sure hope not.

Why on earth would there be such a law?

No. But most businesses set a minimum drawer amount to keep in their drawers to make cash transactions for the following day and deposit the rest.

There are no laws that I'm aware of, I start each night with a set amount. If the first two customers come in and pay with $100s then I'm screwed ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

You're not impressing anyone taking a $50 bill to the snowball stand, broke *****.

The only businesses I'm aware of that have minimum cash on hand requirements are casinos (the amount of coins they keep is ridiculous). Casinos are expected to be able to redeem every chip and token they have. First someone has to beat the casino for several million, and then they have to want their winnings in cash. If you assume that a $100 bill weighs one gram, then $100,000 weighs 1kg, and $1 million weighs 10kg. Several million in cash gets pretty heavy. Most people would rather have a check from the casino when they win big.

I'm I the only one who finds it sickening that our culture expects there to be a law for every little thing that bothers them.
