I've never seen this movie, but it must be damn good to have beaten Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line for Best Picture. Or did it unfairly win the award?
For those who've seen it, is it really that good? Just curious.

Wasn't even that good

I enjoyed it. Wasn't as good as Saving Private Ryan but it was still a great film.

I thought it was great, but in no way it should've won over SPR.

Great movie. Funny and heartfelt. Essentially everything the Oscars love.
It is nowhere near the film Saving Private Ryan is.

A lot better when it came out
Rewatching it, that was pretty bad
Judi Dench was in it
Saving Private Ryan should have won for first ten minutes of film, after that, how much of it was really true because the rest was more Hollywood. I doubt they would let those guys just wander around looking for one guy.

I enjoyed it more than the two war movies. Outside of the first 20 minutes of Ryan the movie sucked and TRL was great visually but all over the place story wise.

I enjoyed it, but should not have won over the other nominations.

It was good, but not SPRG. The worst part about that was for the Oscars, Harrison Ford presented the Oscar for Best Picture. You could literally see his face drop after he opened the envelope, took out the card and read "Shakespeare in Love" instead of "Saving Private Ryan."

I would hate to have your taste in movies. If you are not moved by "Earn This", well then just damn.

I thought it was good but not great. It was not a movie that I would watch multiple times. Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line are way better IMO.

It is a very good movie that gets unfairly hated on because it beat SPR for best picture.

do you really think it is good, or do you think it is good because it is about WWII and set around D-Day.
The first 20 minutes is great, the rest is nothing special and the begining/end scene with the old Ryan is just horrible and should have been cut.

did she? Judi Dench won, i don't remember Gwneth winning anything. Geoffery Rush was also awesome.

I love it, but agree it didn't deserve to win the Oscar over Life is Beautiful

I think its a fantastic movie and an extremely accurate portrayal of WWII combat. All accounts I've read from military historians and Veterans praise Spielberg's attention to detail. Its a powerful story that makes you question the old adage "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."
The end scene is not horrible. Its a man questioning if the sacrifices of others for his own life were justified. I can only imagine having to carry around that burden for my entire life.

I'm pretty sure most of that applies to the first 20 minutes.

I get the point of it, it's about as subtle as hitting you upside the head with a 2X4. It is overally smaltzy and out of place.
One thing i do like is the use of the faded color film, that was a nice touch. It is a good looking movie. But I think it is grossly over rated because it is about D-Day.

Now we're having a Saving Private Ryan bash, eh? I love it. Let's take all the popular movies that are also critically acclaimed and bash them in a single thread.
We could bash movies like Titanic, Braveheart, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Patton, The French Connection... hell, even the GODFATHER! Think about it! Think about how contrarian we can be! Think about how cool we'd appear to the other people on this board if we went against the prevailing thought on film and believed Chinatown to have been overacted! God, we'd look cool.
