Upton rejects trade to Mariners

7:10 PM: FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports that the Diamondbacks were in agreement on a trade that would have sent Justin Upton to the Mariners, but that the outfielder rejected the proposed deal.
The Mariners are one of four teams on Upton’s no-trade list. Players often waive their no-trade rights if they are compensated in some way, but it appears that he just doesn’t want to play in Seattle. Of course, coming back to Arizona would now be pretty awkward, too. The Rangers and Braves are still interested, so chances are the D-Backs will continue to shop him.
Rosenthal hears that the Diamondbacks would have received a package of young players in return for Upton, but their identities aren’t known. As our own Matthew Pouliot speculates, it’s likely that names like Taijuan Walker, Danny Hultzen, Nick Franklin, Carter Capps and Stephen Pryor could have been discussed.

MLB teams are way too willing to give players no-trade clauses.

Well that's on the Dbacks, they have a copy of his list.

But for what? Don't see the Braves having the ammo.

Look at who the Mariners were willing to give, Braves could not offer anything similar

Upton would have sucked playing half his games in Safeco anyway. He has a career .731 OPS on the road.

they have a BJ to dangle in front of him
:rimshot:
they have some starting pitching they can depart with

Well that's a kick in the balls. Usually teams are just in the no trade list as a bargaining chip but I guess he really doesn't want to hit at Safeco. Really curious what the deal would have been.

None of the pitchers the Braves can offer are as good as Walker and Hultzen.

The braves definitely have the ammo. It's just a question of are they willing to part with it.

Braves have said Simmons is off the table. The farm just isn't good as it once was.

They moved the fences in

Graham, Teheran/Delgado, Betancourt would have to be included.

Still going to be a pitcher's park, especially compared to Arizona.

They wouldn't be one of the main teams in these talks for so long if they didn't have players to send over. Teheran and Delgado are 2 of them. I'd be willing to bet the clubs have been close to a deal once or twice already.

Wren hasn't spoken to Towers since before Christmas.
