Brees' stolen 2009 MVP
Posted on 1/10/13 at 9:51 am

Brees had more touchdowns (34v33), way less interceptions (16 vs 11), higher completion % (NFL record 70.6 v 68.8), higher YPA (8.54 v 7.88) and a much higher QB rating (109.6 v 99.9).
Mannings MVP was pretty comparable to Brees' #'s this year

Thanks for the reminder. Fits right in with the weather today.

manning did it with Jim Caldwell, we did it with Sean Payton. Look that was pretty much the nail on the head, Peyton continued success nearly by himself that year with colts.

Didn't you hear? All of Brees stats are padded

Drew had 11 interceptions, but I agree with your post. He was robbed.

This thread is giving me a homer boner.

It was SOLELY because they started 14-0 and we only started 13-0.
However, the fact that it is Manning and not small market Brees did play a role I'm sure...

Blame the media for there love affair with all things Manning. I for one is waiting for Manning to choke again in the playoffs. Don't think he can last but another season. Most of his passes are ducks that find it's mark. Arm strength want last much longer

Although he was most definitely robbed in 2009, the consolation prize wasn't too shabby:

Yeah, it is a sham. Since that year the MVP is meaningless. Sportswriters should not determine the MVP, HOF, etc. they shouldn't be involved in any process of the sort. Anyway, people will look back and see brees' superior year and his head o head win against manning in the biggest game
They'll also look back and see that brees had a better run from 06-forward
3 5,000 yard seasons. Out of 6 such seasons
Back to back (2013 to back?) 40 TD years
Single season completion percentage
Single season yards
It just makes it so bad that we got completely screwed this year. frick 3 G for that, and for not being able I stop Alex smith from driving the length if the field

I'm convinced people are subconsciously looking for any excuse to just frick over Brees.
Not for his mouth (because this disrepect started before he became a regular soundbite in the news), but I think it's mainly because he doesn't have a cannon or ideal height, so there's a built-in measurables bias that began since the draft.
In addition, they just don't want to give him top honors because some think it is all system driven. I remember Cowherd put #8 Carson Palmer over #10 Brees before the 2009 season because "if you put Carson with Sean Payton, his numbers would be astronomical...One of the best arms in the leaugue!"
So one year they'll say "Oh, Manning won more games than Brees". The next year, it's "Rodgers had less INT's & a better YPA than Brees". One year they'll base it on games won, the next they'll base it on stats, whichever suits their subconscious bias-driven agenda. All the while, Brees is setting stat records AND makes it further or just as far as the MVP winners did in the playoffs.
To win the overall MVP, Brees will have to have the best record, most yards/TD's, highest YPA, and have the least amount of INT's. But then again, that's probably when they'll give it to somebody like RG3 for having "the most rushing yards ever by a QB" or some shite.

The reasons voters voted for Manning was because he was undefeated under center. They were 14-0 and leading the jets at halftime when manning was pulled. Colts went on to lose and lost their last game when manning didnt play.
Brees lost to cowboys and bucs in week 15 and 16. That sealed manning's MVP. It sucks, but I'm guessing that swayed the voters and put the nail in coffin on Brees over manning.

Personally, the only stats that matter to me when I look at qb's is:
1.Ints
2.TD's
3.Completion % (this is drews flashiest stat column imo)
4.Attempts
5.Sacks
in that order
I don't really even consider yards because that stat is so loosely translated to success and more about the run/pass ratio of the team. It is much more possible for a team to have 500 yds and lose, than a team with 5 ints or 0 td's thrown to win. Yds is not a very strong indicator of success.
You guys also seem to be bringing career numbers into this discussion which imo doesn't and shouldn't have anything to do with the mvp vote for a certain yr.
I think the only year anyone has an argument for drew brees getting mvp is the superbowl year. It could have gone either way.
I'm not too offended by manning getting it that year either. If you take off your stat colored glasses and realize that manning was basically running the offense himself that year, you cant really argue that he didn't deserve it. Brees also deserved it but alas there is only one award and I guarantee the majority of the nation found the selection they made more acceptable.
Then again, whether or not Brees gets individual awards matters very little to me. As long as he's winning games, I'm satisfied with the compensation hes getting, all 100 mill of it.

Brees got robbed, but in the end he won the one that counts
