Chicago Tribune: Sources within Big 10 say they might want to expand to 18 teams

By then the Big Ten will have at least 14 schools, assuming Rutgers can trim the Big East's 27-month notification for departure. Some sources within the Big Ten believe the conference won't stop expanding until it hits 18.
With 14, the conference can start over on divisions and chuck "Legends and Leaders" into the hopper with new Coke and Segways. An East-West divide would be a celebrated departure from those cumbersome monikers.

I wouldn't mind seeing that happen, especially for the eventual collapse under their own weight that would happen. WAC part deux.

Did you just compare the Big 10 to the WAC?

I'm comparing the eventuality of the Big 10 to what happened in the 90s with the WAC.

Holy frick. Why would you want that many?
Posted on 1/7/13 at 11:28 am to ProjectP2294
yeah, that's what i thought.
I'm pretty sure that every school in the Big 10, even if it goes to 18 teams, is a tad bit better off financially than the teams that were part of that WAC debacle.

In other words, the Big 10 is pissed at Notre Dame and they want to dismantle the ACC as a result

Before long, the term "conference" will be arbitrary, and the term "division" will hold more significance.

The WAC failed because the schools couldn't afford to pay for travel for Olympic sports with the vast geographical spread of the conference. Neither money nor geography will be a problem for Big10 schools.

They're probably trying to get all the ACC schools (minus Pitt) that are in the AAU. GT, UVA, UNC, and Duke are the four such schools.
If the move took place then VT and NCST probably come to the SEC as has long been rumored here.

Pretty soon LSU will be in the western division of the SEC and will only play those schools and the eastern side will in essence be another conference.
Big 10 raids ACC
SEC and Big 12 split what's left of the ACC
Texas needs an independent deal like Notre Dame with quasi conference affiliation

For what purpose? I understand taking Maryland and Rutgers to be able to get into the eastern coast, but at a certain point, you're watering down your revenue. Not sure how scale is really helping them in this case.

Always thought that four 16 team conferences wouldn't work because there are still teams out there that are good enough to warrant belonging in one of these super conferences. Now four 18 or 20 team conferences could work.

More revenue for Big Ten Network at least in theory. If you can command more $/subscriber by having a member school in a territory, you try to add a member there that brings something more than mere physical presence.

I guess when you don't have quality, you aim for quantity

So what 4 teams would they add? (I didn't want to register for the Tribune so I could read that.)

yeah, sounds like new markets are driving expansion
if they want four more then how about:
north carolina
virginia
georgia tech
fourth is harder but if Notre Dame refuses they may take a Duke, Kansas type school

Hey, if we keep adding teams, eventually we'll find a couple that Purdue can beat. I'm all for it.
