Can't believe they made me feel bad for Thomas the sadistic footman.
I thought this myself. I can't stand him but it made me upset to see him cry.
Oh, and my wife and I were glad they didn't dwell on the morbidity of the funeral. It was sad enough, without having to endure every tear and eulogy. I thought the showing of the line of black cars leaving the DA and Lord Grantham standing outside alone as they departed was a perfect summary image.

So I only read the posts so far on this page, but my quick review leads me to believe y'all don't think that this show now sucks.
It's turned into a wordy and boring soap opera IMO. We used to get excited to watch, but this season it's been more that I'm excited for the episode to end.

Bumping for tonight--do I watch Downton live and record Walking Dead or vice versa?

How do they manage to make me have sympathy for that jerk Thomas? I hate him and yet I feel sorry for him.

Damn that was one hell of an episode. It had so much going on, might be my favorite of the entire series so far.

I love how Maggie Smith tricked Rose into telling her what happened.

Robert's been incompetent and a borderline villain this season, so it was nice for him to finally have a good moment (even after he argued they invest the family fortune with Charles Ponzi -- nice touch). While it wasn't a big moment, he had a hand in almost all of the resolutions: he "forgives" Thomas and keeps him on staff, he nips the police investigation in the bud, he keeps Jimmy happy by promoting him, and he doesn't undercut Carson's authority. He keeps the tradition of the metaphor, I mean cricket game, and he brings his radical son-in-law closer into the fold, albeit reluctantly. He agrees to modernize, sees his role diminished, while also increasing his authority as the final word.
He still had a terrible year, but at least some of the old Lord Grantham got to shine last night.
