I have a WASR, which is the Romanian version and a Norinco, which is the Chicom version. I can't tell a huge difference. All I did was change the furniture, paint them with Alumibrite II, and install a recoil buffer to reduce the slap. Not one failure in over 2k rounds between them. Ammo is much cheaper in 5.45x39 and available in non-corrosive for about $180 for 1000 rounds. It's harder to find than 7.62x39 which seems o have a more volatile price, though. I hear the Bulgarian models from Arsenal are the best but I've never shot one.

Not sure, and not sure hot long I will be in town, coming in to look at an apartment fire, but I think the damage will be minimal. I am scheduled to be in Monroe for 11:00...

All the hoorah seems to be on the AR's and not the AK's
Why so ?
I know AK's are "heavier" and are say 30 cal, a bigger round and both are semi autos.
Are AK's not made anymore and all in the hands of the "sand" armies ?
So why not an AK ?
I'm a little late for this thread, but let me throw in this bit.
An AK is not for home defense unless you live out in the country and don't have family sleeping in any room other than yours.
Dang 7.62x39 penetrates like a mother. It's like a semi-auto .30-30. Will go right through a house, and perhaps the next one too.

What brands, year, country of manufact are good AK's.
Arsenal out of Bulgaria probably makes the best AK available to American civilians. It has a milled receiver rather than the cheap stamped parts. And the fit and finish is much higher. They even have some with Styer chrome lined barrels. That said even a cheap Century american assembled rifle from parts kits will go bang every time. There is a reason the AK hasn't changed very much since its creation. It just works and is very simple to operate. Few moving parts and sloppy tolerances make for a very dependable rifle.

If you have the extra cash, and can find one, I'd suggest the Sig 556R.
I picked mine up a few weeks ago.
Shoots like a dream.
Think of her as a top tier AK.
I also like my Sig 556, which is the 5.56 version.
Both are nice.

1000 round of 7.62 Golden Tiger arrived at my door about 3pm from Sgammo.com. 45 minutes later, the mail man brought me my 4 extra Yugo mags
