Per 24/7. Supposedly interviewed yesterday. LSU guys, what can you tell me about him?

Sources have confirmed to Hookem.com a report that Larry Porter will be named as the next running backs coach at Texas. There has been no word on when the announcement will be made official, but sources have confirmed that Porter is the pick.
Porter is said to have interviewed with Texas yesterday.
Porter has deep ties to the state of Texas as a recruiter. He recruited the state first for Oklahoma State from 2002-2004, then at LSU from 2005-2009.
Porter left LSU in 2009 to take the head coaching position at his alma mater, Memphis, where he was let go prior .
Porter then took an open position on Todd Graham's staff in Tempe, Ariz.
The 40-year old Porter has 14 years of experience coaching running backs on the collegiate level, starting his career at Tennessee-Martin before heading to Arkansas State, then on to O-State, LSU, Memphis and Arizona State.
Porter is considered an ace recruiter, once being named the national recruiter of the year by Rivals.com. Porter has tutored numerous NFL running backs, including Joe Addai and Tatum Bell.

your RB with the nicest calves is about to become massively underutilized.

Not really a position coach but pure recruiter
Does so dirty stuff on the recruiting trail.
All he does to coach the RBs is say," ball security's Job security, yours and mine"
Hard to coach RBs. It's like hey find a hole and run. That's why most of the big recruiters are RB coaches. RB is mostly talent. Ex frank Wilson

It'd mean Texas fans couldn't look down from their Ivory tower when talking about street agents.

Mack has been adamant about not being involved with anyone like that. How involved was he?

Porter was involved with Willie Lyles. I don't care too much about that stuff but UT fans loved to flaunt their independence from street agents as a badge of honor.

This'll go well if we hire him then

It's not like he'll help in coaching so if Mack overlooks that I'd think he's now scared of A&M in recruiting.

His nickname on the staff was Coach Step. Because when the offensive coaches were game planning, he was asked to step out of the room. He has connections in Texas, but can't coach his way out of a paper bag. And his RB rotation is confusing at best.

His kid is a little bitch I know that much.

Arizona State assistant coach Larry Porter is expected to be named the Longhorns’ new running backs coach, perhaps as early as Wednesday, a source close to the Texas program said Tuesday night. Porter, 40, will fill the vacancy created when Major Applewhite took over coaching quarterbacks as UT’s primary offensive co-coordinator after Bryan Harsin left to become head coach at Arkansas State. Porter spent 2010-2011 as head coach at the University of Memphis before being dismissed with a 3-21 record. He became the running backs coach at Arizona State in 2012 and the Sun Devils averaged 205.3 rushing yards per game to rank 24th in the nation. Regarded as an outstanding recruiter, Porter coached running backs at Oklahoma State from 2002-2004 before taking the same position at LSU, where he coached from 2005-2009. He has worked on staffs at LSU with current Longhorns assistant coaches Stacey Searels and Bo Davis.

So was our previous RB coach until he realized what Lyles was all about
Porter will be a definite plus in recruiting which is what you want in ur RB coach.
Now we just need to create an opening at DC/LB coach.

RB rotation will now be based on who he is butt buddies with. Best RB will sit for making him mad.

Same individuals who are complaining abouut him were lauding him for his recruiting while at LSU. He is a very good recruiter and was our main recruiter while here. As stated, his coaching ability is suspect. Has history with Searles. Who is the main recruiter on the UT staff now?
Maybe Brown is looking to shore up his in-state recruiting with some other in-state programs on the rise.

Our best recruiter right now is Applewhite. Dude is money; he almost singlehandedly held together our class after the 5-7 season. He's our only ace out of the coaches though. Mack seems like he's lost it as of late.

There, I fixed it for you. Hoping 2013 is Mack's swan song (assuming I don't get my Christmas wish and retires tomorrow).

It's gonna be interesting to see what happens when Brown leaves... do you guys see a lot of the current assistant staff being retained? IMO, UT would benefit from a total cutting of ties from the Mack Brown Era.... not that he or his assistants are solid coaches, but the program needs a new, more hard-nozed attitude.

I think we have a hard-nosed staff, but the overall attitude starts with the HC, and Mack is anything but hard-nosed. At this point, Manny Diaz is the only assistant that I would be happy to see leave. I could've expected a drop off with the defense after the talent we lost at LB last year, but to field the worst defense statistically in Texas' 100+ year history should be a fireable offense.
